Long Term Power Tool Hire?

Hi there,

With summer inbound, I've decided to replace my windows with double glaze units. I'm going to be doing this over the next 3-4 weekends. For this I need a nail gun…

I've looked at the nail gun options, and they seem to be priced from 200-500 dollars all in to purchase a unit outright (either a 240v unit, or a air compressor driven setup through to a cordless fancy number).
I've looked at hiring the tool - which runs at $30+ a day.
I've thought about buying new and selling it off after I've finished with it.

My question is… What's the best way to go, Is there an option I'm not across? Unfortunately I do not have tradie mates!

Paul

Perhaps buy second hand from Gumtree then sell it right back when you're done?

  • so far it looks cheaper to buy new! Checked gumtree..

Need to establish a not-for-profit tool club, which pools tools together and people join for a fee… Shame something like this would likely get abused!

  • The rent would soon pay for the item
Do you need a brad gun? For the architraves?
Cost is more like $250-300 for a handyman gun and compressor
The compressor would come in handy later for other tasks

Are you certain it is a nail gun you need? Some walls/frames combinations require screws and a suitable electric drill or impact driver (which are more universal tools worth keeping). BTW, this is very difficult job, not really suitable for a handyman, good luck!

  • Get a compressor one. You can always use the compressor again… Painting etc.

Hiring one for $30 a day (are you planning on hiring on Friday and returning on Monday or just keeping it for 4 weeks?) If you plan on keeping it for 4 weeks wait for a bunnings sale.

    • A good investment if you need a compressor - a waste if you don't

I'd go a paslode new and sell it afterwards, they sell quick and easy and you will easily recoup most of the cost, certainly better than hiring one.

  • Hammer? you don't 'need' a nail gun, people survived for hundreds of years without them.

Having said that, I bought an air powered one for my reno's. Worth it for sure.

Long term rental isn't worth it normally. Buy one, then sell it when you are done.
