Council Closing Whole Street

Hey guys!

The wife and I recently moved. Been there for 2 months. It's a court/dead end street and the apartment we rent is at the end of the street. We have basement parking included for 1 car and all on street parking is 2P/2 hours.

We both work in the CBD and catch public transport to get to work and use the car at night/weekends only.

We got a letter from the council saying the whole street will be closed for works involving drainage upgrades and resurfacing etc. The whole street will be closed with no access for 6 weeks.

The letter advised we had to make our own arrangements. I feel for a 6 week period… this is a little unrealistic.

I've asked them to provide a designated car spot for us to use temporarily (i.e. there's a church across with plenty of "private" parking they could maybe talk to) or provide an "exemption" to the 2 hour limits for us. I doubt they'll organise either.

Is there anything anyone can suggest? I'll have to park my car about 10 mins from my house for unlimited parking… which I find a bit ridiculous. Or cop a parking fine everyday.

Any advice/tips etc are greatly appreciated.

Cheers

    That's bs… 6 weeks is ridiculous

If you have kids, what the hell are you meant to do?

If it was a week… or even 2… I'd cop it on the chin. Use bikes to get to the car etc. Whatever.

6 weeks is ridiculous. Glad I'm not the only one who thinks that!

  • What if it is raining? Walk in the rain to get to your car for six weeks?

Is this going to affect you only or others on the same street?

Maybe get together with everyone affected by this closure and discuss reasonable solutions with the council.

    • Well our apartment complex has 30+ apartments.

Would body corporate need to organise something?

  • Geez, don't they do these things one side (of the road) at a time??!

Ive just come by to say that is pretty rat shit.

"rat shit".. props for bringing back a phrase I haven't heard in a while

  • Sell your car and go on holidays
You don’t really use it anyway
Just carshare and get groceries delivered

    • We literally just downgraded 2 cars to 1 haha.

I use it every day on the weekend and twice during the week for basketball. Looked at car share… not an option as it costs more for how often we use it.

We also just had a 4 week honeymoon. So holidays aren't an option

We already use yourgrocer for delivery. Actually… how would that work now with the whole street being closed? :P

"The whole street will be closed with no access for 6 weeks." 6wks you must be in SA

    • I was about to say the same! Oh SA, the Roadworks State of Australia.

      • Yeah in SA we are still discussing it when the other states have finished.

  • From the council side, they usually put these letters out with a worst case scenario and will work with residents as best possible. It is difficult to balance getting residents in and out and getting the work done.

Talk to them, and you'll probably find that you may be able to access you basement out of hours unless they are working across your driveway. It does sound like the on street parking will be gone for the duration though.

Don't go all ballistic at them when you ring, be reasonable and you'll get a better response.

  • drive down the footpath or across everyone's front lawn to get to your place

  • Ask council to cover adjacent parking signs so that any timed restrictions are removed.
