Please Help Me Find Me a Good Green Tea

Please help find me a good green tea, mostly likely Chinese folks out here can help?

OK.. I drink upto 5 cups of coffee a day, that's the only drug addiction I have:p

Going forward want to slowly replace that with good quality green tea.

I have tried Japanese Sencha from Costco apart from Indian green tea.

People at work have commercial selling brands like X50, but they still believe there are traditional ones out there and are better.

Don't mind paying 200-300 dollars a kilo as long as it full of good stuff

  • Green tea is full of antioxidants but I wouldn't really make drinking it a habit either. It's pretty harsh on your tummy if you drink 5 cups a day. Also they go off pretty quickly so don't re-use it the next day. In terms of quality, it'll be difficult to find good quality loose leaf green tea in Australia. They won't import the expensive ones as no one will buy them. In Melbourne, I've seen a couple of tea shops in the city where they sell some pretty good quality stuff. The most popular varieties include the Dragon Well (Long Jin) tea and the Iron Budda (Tie Guan Yin) tea. Apparently when you get these expensive tea leaves, you're supposed to keep them fresh in the freezer. I did that before, but honestly I didn't notice much difference. Personally, a good tea should also be drunk with the experience. You serve it with the right equipment, the right temperature of water, and drink in small cups slowly over conversation. Sort of similar to the Japanese Matcha ceremony. I like Matcha powder too, don't really like Sencha or Korean barley tea.

What I would really recommend you try is the Chinese Puer tea. It's very smooth, even the cheap ones are smooth, full of health benefits and has less caffeine. It's fermented and sort of sits between green tea and black tea and is beneficial for your digestion.

A caffeine free option you can try is Rooibos. Personally I quite like it too.

    • Thank you so much for your response, much appreciated. Where in the CBD I can get Chinese Puer tea, wouldn't mind giving it a shot

      • You can try the Chinese grocery stores in China Town, but I do remember there used to be a nice tea shop in QV. It's sort of like T2 but independent. A quick Google shows that there is still a store there, but it's called Lupicia Fresh Tea now. I don't think it's the same shop I was thinking but it does have Pu Er tea, although quite expensive. You might find other teas there you like though, they seemed to have lots of different varieties.

Went to Lupicia today, good thanks!

I'm asian myself and I would suggests trying to ordering Taiwanese Tea or more specific "Taiwanese Ali Shan Green Tea" I dont drink tea on a daily basis but I do enjoy green and black tea. Hope you find your dream tea

Note: If you need help looking for cheaper ones I can try to help you locate some since Taiwan is my home country even though I was born in Australia :P

    • I second this! We bought some good quality ones when we went there and it's one of my favourite types of teas.

    • Thank you, yes please!!
      I am in Melbourne CBD
Did a quick search seems like only Amazon sells it.

      • Theres a lot of asian "line" groupchats that you can ask people before they come to Australia to get the Ali Shan Tea and thats probably the cheapest and safest way

        • Line as the app? Cool will try it out

        • @Htb:
I could try to get in contact with someone in the groupchat since they all speak chinese and very little englis, what part of Australia are you from?

        • @JayJayAU: I am from Melbourne

        • @Htb: Thats pretty handy since a lot of people still go to Melbourne

  • Where are you located, I know a place in Melb.

    • YES, I am in Melbourne :)

      • This place at QV Melbourne has a large selection of teas, go in a try some.

        • I think I pass this store every day!, never thought of it

        • Went there and bought Taiwanese Ali oolong. Will try it tonight

        • @Htb: Hope you enjoy!

        • @CLoSeR: Thank you!

  • Try this Japanese sencha, I buy from my local Asian store for about $9:

Make sure you get the sencha gold, its much nicer and higher quality than the silver or the cheaper packet just labelled as sencha.

The T2 Japanese sencha is also nice but pricier.

    • Thank you, that gives me more options to choose from.
I can see some with rice, what are they used for our if curiosity?

  • I stock up at IPPODO whenever I go to Japan, their Sencha "Unro" is great for everyday drinking but my favourite is their Genmaicha. You get a bomb of umami with their more expensive range but I find it's a bit too much for my simple tastebuds. I think they ship to Australia

    • Thank you, they do have a great range.
Would that be an issue importing it being a food product?

  • Another place to look is in Korean grocery storEs

    • Thanks will check it out.

  • If you want tea bag convenience for work I use Madam Flavours green tea. For white tea leaves (not tea with milk) I use Lotus Peak white tea. But if you want loose leaf then yeah follow the others advice.

Madame Flavour's green tea with pear and jasmine is really nice. You can get that loose in Coles(not sure if they do that still) but they also have an office in Brighton VIC that you can order direct from (they offer free pickup during business hours).

      • Hi, yep that's the one. You can get loose leaf at Coles (I accidentally bought it)

        • Nice I will try them as well, making a nice collection now, thanks guys
