Fake SanDisk Micro SD Cards at Raintechnology on eBay

Good morning all,

I picked up a few 64gb micro SD cards as a result of this deal (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/318929) recently.

I just wanted to warn others that the cards I received were obvious fakes. I say this because:

  1. The printing on the card itself looks like it was done with an inkjet printer
  2. The barcode on the back linked with a class 6 card not the class 10 it was advertised as
  3. The micro SD card has printed on the back that it's made in Taiwan but the SD adaptor is made in China. The packaging for the whole thing says that it's made in China.
  4. Most importantly it only has 16gb of memory (if I'm reading the H2testw results correctly:
The media is likely to be defective.
    14.7 GByte OK (31010129 sectors)
47.7 GByte DATA LOST (100055727 sectors)
    Details:3.4 MByte overwritten (7053 sectors)
  5. Once I completed the test, the SD card couldn't be found

If I've interpreted anything wrong here please let me know, but I wanted to have it noted in relation to raintechnology for any future deals.

Cheers

I hope when Amazon launches in Oz that their memory prices will be low enough to not even think about the dodgey retailers.

If you buy any SD card on ebay you are asking for it to be fake, unless you've done thorough research on their feedback and are also lucky.

H2testw is really the only thing you need, the printing on fakes can be very good and shouldn't be relied on to tell a fake from a non-fake.

  • Bad luck dude. I have been hit by this with a USB flash drive from eBay years ago.. same time I learnt about H2testw.

Only buy flash storage from reputable sources or Amazon nowadays. So many dodgy tempting cheap deals on eBay and otherwise but these days I know better.

    • Yeah I'll definitely be sourcing better this time. They were extremely quick to refund my money though… they didn't even offer to replace them with different ones which says a lot.

Both are now dead 3 days after first use.
