Need cheap network full size sim 1 month calls only

Strange situation.

I have a mare who is about to foal. I have an alarm that attaches to her head (via halter) and sends an alert if she lies down for too long. That is the indication she is giving birth. I need to be there to attend to issues, and maybe stop foxes eating the baby whilst the mother is exhausted. Gross.

The alarm wirelessly connects to a dialer. The dialer has a full size sim card, and when the alarm is triggered it sends a recorded message via mobile network to my phone.
Horse will give birth within the next month.

So I want:
cheap
1 month only
preferably telstra network
call only, but might be a few depending on false alarms. Each call is short, as I only need to see it ring to know I have to check.
preferably full size sim unless I can find an adapter easily. Most seem to be ebay and take days.
Want to get it done today/tomorrow at latest.

Is the normal telstra pre-paid best for this?

Thanks.

  • Telstra prepaid surely is the best…

You shouldn't have a issue getting a full size SIM… The prepaid packs still have them.

Just to be clear, resellers like Boost and Woolworths don't have the full coverage of the Telstra network. So if you live in a dodgy signal area then full Telstra would be the best option.

    • Boost does have full coverage of the Telstra Network unlike the rest of the Telstra resellers.

  • +1

I think Woolworths is Telstra network.
    $2 sim + $15 recharge (includes $250 calls). 30 day expiry.
($13.50 with your 10% Woolworths Rewards Discount)

  • Since it sounds kind of important I don't know if the OzBargain way is the best way.

If I needed the reliability of Telstra but running out of credit didn't matter I would probably get a $5 ALDI SIM with $5 included (12 cent/min calls). If you receive a lot of false alarms you'd be screwed. You could get the unlimited calls pack for $15. Or the Woolworths small pack (with $250/min? calls) for the same price (10% off with rewards, but you'll need the SIM for $2 anyway).

I also assume that all resellers still give the larger outer pieces but I don't want to sound over-confident in case they change and I'm wrong :)

Update:Beaten by Nancy. OzBargain should behave like Facebook and give live updates on desktop to help avoid people like me that always write long comments looking like idiots :)

  • If you just need to hear it ring but don't pick up then you are not paying for the call so an Aldimobile prepaid will not run out.

What do you mean by full size SIM? Back in the day it was credit card size. I suspect you mean mini SIM which is still in use.

  • Yes probably mini sim, not micro. I am not old enough to really remember credit card sized sims.

I personally use a woolworths 2yr plan on my mobile (found via ozbargain of course) and have found no difference in the semi rural areas I live in, so they may be best.

And yes it is kind of important, but we are not talking Winx or Black Caviar.

I don't mind spending $20 just don't want to get stuck on a long plan or have huge bills when she rings 5 times a night for a foot massage.

Thanks for the tips. I will try WW or Aldi, both are local.

Is the device you're using 3G compatible.

Just checking as the 2G network has been shut down and your dialler may no longer work.

    • Haha. So true. You wouldn't imagine such a complicated setup today if it was instead a mainstream consumer product.

With my ignorance I would just look for an app to use on the cheapest smartphone (e.g. https://www.foalapp.com).
