Need Some Advice on Which Hosting Service to Use

Hi fellow ozbargainers,

I'm building an app/website and just need advice on what you think is the best hosting service.
Let's say I'm expecting around 2000 active users a day for both the website and app. what recommendations would you give?

I've seen host gator and Amazon AWS but I'm not sure on what I need exactly.

    depends on the application, what SLA's you have with your users, how "heavy" it is, and how many $$ you want to pour into it.

    eg. 2000 active users per day, on an app that only records contacts is different to 2000 active users per day that are performing massive db ops

      Just a random question what would be a ball park amount for the two extreme use case situations?

        Anywhere from 5-50 a month for low end, low requirement, low spec.

        To hundreds or thousands per month depending on requirement. Its such a guestimation game without all the info :(

      Let's say I'm building something similar to hipages and airtasker, in the manner where someone sends a request and other parties send out quotes for that request.

      the app while open constantly refreshes to check for new requests/quotes coming through so it would need to be decent in returning that info into the app/website.

      I've looked at hostgator but I'm not sure about the options. would I need a dedicated server or a VPS for this kind of thing? not really sure about the difference.

    How many concurrent users are you looking at?
    What database technology?
    What app language?
    Using any external services?

    Vps is virtualised using shared hardware with a minimum dedicated and a maximum burstable.

    If you can just leverage services go the aws route. Long term it will likely be easier to scale up if the service takes off.

    Have you seen the professional plan of wpengine 100K visitors along with free SSL but it's little expensive because they charge $990 for a year. But it can fulfill your requirement.
