NBN Box Inspection / Tamper / Vandals

I have had the luxury of NBN fttp for about 12 months (Thx julia) location: NSW

Arriving home on the weekend, and i notice on the outside of my house, the grey box open, and the smaller white box lid sitting on the grass. Clearly someone has opened the box and accessed something inside? Is this a thing?

Theory 1: Do NBN people come and inspect these boxes in the same way that Ausgrid will come and inspect the power meter & usage?
Theory 2: I have had someone from the Australian FBI (equivalent) 'tap' my internet and install a bug
Theory 3: Some punk teenager has fttp envy and tried to vandalise my internets?
Theory 4: strong winds unscrewed the hex head screw and blew the white cover off

Any thoughts?

why dont you just report the box is open instead of posting about it?

If it were me, i'd be putting the lid back on. Last thing you need is for water destroying your net.

I feel that the Ozbargain community would give better information and advice then the NBN hotline

Imagine those poor meter-reading buggers going from house to house, checking usage and charging you per kilobyte hour.

They are trying to put a filter in to stop you from visiting OzBargain. Businesses has been losing heaps since the dawn of OzB era.

    • Most likely response so far

    No

No, they'd do it at other end.

Theory 3: Some punk teenager has fttp envy and tried to vandalise my internets?

    Probably

Theory 4: strong winds unscrewed the hex head screw and blew the white cover off

Maybe if you live down-wind from an allen key distributor ?

Maybe your neighbor couldn't hack your wifi password so they have had to go the old fashioned method and make a wired connection to steal your internet.

Contact NBNco and they should address the issue.

  • What was holding the grey box closed?

If in the sun, the plastic clip may have deformed slightly over time:
    1. Door opens under gravity (unless they managed to lean it back slightly, instead of down when screwed to the wall).
    2. Anything loose inside flies off in the wind and lands on the grass rather than in the neighbor's dog's mouth. Phew!

Definitely, this happens to the same crumby, non-recyclable ABS boxes used when Murdoch made us all pay for Helstra's string-lining of Foxtel HFC in metro areas, even though <1/20 wanted to connect (after they added DOCSIS Internet to the offering).

Lucky though- it could be worse. You could have water in your Internets and could be on your way to a connectivity meltdown. Better install a secondary internet cooling system now, before it's too late. Next time the rain could take out your main internet cooling systems and Fukishima II may not be so narrowly avoided!

    • Its a torx head screw, normally pretty well secured when closed. definitely looked like someone had accessed it.

      • It had a Torx? Is it still there?

Even security torx would not make it very hard to open.

Most likely the tech (who most likely only carries a philips and flat headed screwdriver) only ever did it up with his/her finger, so it just opened itself after a while.

The last tech in our street left a cover off a pit. The one before that left the top of the distribution post. Maybe he was selling them for scrap.
