Got an email about this one. Looks like a pretty good bike for 600 bucks. Normally 1399.

  • Looks like this one is better than half price too.

  • I'll probably get negged for this, but those specs are pretty average and what i would expect from a MTB around $599 or even less. $1399 is just dreaming and i really hope no-one ever paid that much for one.

    • Care to elaborate? I am in the market and don't know exactly what I'm looking for/at.

    • -2

Totally, that's like a $600 bike that should be on special for $400

The bike is definitely not worth $1399, but it is quite decent for $599. I'm not sure where else you'd be able to get Shimano Deore components and a Rockshox fork at this price.

A Polygon (usually one of the best value around) at the same price only gives you Shimano Alivio components and a Suntour fork.

      • Here is the 27 speed Polygon - 2018 Polygon Premier 5.0 Mountain Bike $599.00 shipped
        The Fluid is 20 Speed (2 x 10)

        • i think the starting price is pretty high but for what its at now its a good price. I've been looking for a bike lately. The freedom machine had this trek for 699. The trek had worse gears and a worse fork.

        • @Fancyman:

Wouldn't the fact that the Polygon has 7 more speeds be a better buy if you are looking to buy a mountain bike?

If you are mainly riding on paths & roads then the extra gears wouldn't be that big a deal, but you wouldn't be buying a mountain bike if that was the case. You'd buy a hybrid or road bike with no shocks.

          @WatchNerd:

The number of gears hardly mean anything, especially when multiple gear combinations overlap each other. The most expensive bikes only have 12 speeds… Looking at the gearing range of the Fluid vs Polygon, their lowest speed gear is the same while the Polygon has a higher speed gear which would hardly ever be used on the trails but might actually get used on roads/footpaths.

In general, more cogs at the back mean a more expensive bike. There's a trend to have less on the front nowadays, many high end bikes are 1x. Triples are usually found on cheaper bikes.

For Deore and a Rockshox XC30 the price is actually pretty good. You would be hard-pressed to find a bike with better specs cheaper than that. An equivalent level bike based purely on specs from a good brand is typically >$1000

No you're wrong. At <=$599aud brand new retail price, it'll be very much impossible to find a rockshox fork on a (mostly) shimano deore specced bike. That said, i do agree that $1399 is overpriced.

I was in the market a year ago and the best i could find was the Silverback Slade 2 for ~$1k.

Also, for those wondering about gears/speed, generally there's a trend for larger range of cogs at the back and less chainrings at the front.
      Why?
Because it simplifies things immensely. Instead of messing both front and back gears trying to find the perfect gear, with a large range of cogs at the back, you will be able to just click into a gear close to what you want and be off with it.
In this bike's case, it has a good range at the back cassette (11-36T) and should be able to tackle most hills (depending on your fitness and the number of teeth on the front chainring) at places such as the royal national park. For more steeper hills, you may want to later look into a bigger range at the back, ie. 11-40T or higher is generally recommend (where the bigger number is the number of teeth on the largest cog/gear 1)
A 10 speed cassette also provides smaller increments between gears so the transition will feel a lot smoother.

Edit - sorry about the essay, was half asleep and started brain dumping in the comment box. Also it'll be nice to see more people out on the trails, which trust me, badly specced/cheap bikes will not cut it and will quickly deter people.

      • I appreciate the essay immensely.
It’ll help me make a more informed decision later on, so thank you for the info mate!

          No problem!
I'm glad I was able to inform someone before they make the dive.
I myself went through a bit of a trial and error process to get my setup just about where I want it, which may not have been the best idea in hindsight.

The other thing to look out for, is the fork specs, but for general trail riding (ie. single track, fire road), a >$550aud rrp will have a "good enough" fork (generally Suntour XCT/XCM/XCR) for entering the sport/hobby.
However, if you plan to ride a little more aggressively, you may find these forks begin to limit your riding.

Also, generally the stock tyres arent very nice, and is usually the best first upgrade to make, as it is relatively cheap and can change the bike characteristics immensely.

I think thats a good general coverage of everything and hope it all helps!

  • My Aldi 29er from last year is still going strong.😀

    • Where do you mainly ride it?

      • +1

        Stromlo believe it or not.
I’ve repaired a few buckles and replaced the tyres as they wore out pretty quickly but other than that she’s been a gem.

        • I believe it's an unbranded Polygon bike.
What tyres did you buy and for how much?

  • Reckon this is a better buy with Shimano SLX for $100 extra and dual suspension but only 19 and 21 inch available:

    https://www.cyclingdeal.com.au/buy/corratec-mtb-airtech-zone…

They also have a SLX/Deore XT version for $749 or full Deore XT for $799 but limited sizes.

    • I’ve been told to steer clear of dual suspension MTB’s under $1500.
Not saying their crap but apparently you would be better off with a hard tail for the same price.

Bought one of these last night. Awesome deal. Hopefully it serves me well for a first bike for recreational rides around parks, streets and a little off road riding. Couldn't find any other bikes with these specs close to this price. Weight is about 16.5 kg which is on the high side. I managed to find one in my local Anaconda store even though their website listed the closest store with one in stock as 1000 kms away. So for anyone looking at one of these, ring around a few stores you might be lucky to find one and avoid the postage from buying online.

    • You should have bought a 2nd hand hybrid bike for recreational rides around parks, streets. It would have been lighter and faster on the roads and paths.

  • For those looking for the Aldi bike in Queensland, they have a few medium size in stock at Aldi Maroochydore Blvd.

    • Thought the ricochet looked like reasonable value - was going to check it out at sunny coast. Checked out Aldi at Maroochy Blvd and boom….. Bought the last bike. Love it . Should be an awesome upgrade to my Big W Dunlop armour bike. The brother in law has polygons, so very confident in the Aldi machine.

      • Happy you found one. I have to wait until next October as I need the large one.
