iPhone 8 or Samsung Galaxy S8?

Hello all! I hope the week is treating you all well.

I am using iPhone 6 (3yrs old), and now its time for me to move on to a new phone. After having some look at the market, I am thinking of buying either of the two - iPhone 8 or S8. Can you all please help me decide one?

One dowside I could see with the S8 is the position of fingerprint reader, don’t know how comfortable that would be. iPhone has worked pretty well for me so far. I have used Galaxy phones in the past (till S4), and then moved to iPhone.

Can you please help me based on your own experience?
Thanks.

Switching between platforms is a big decision.

Really be sure as I have friends who have done this (IOS to Android Android to IOS), and with one exception all have found the experience painful and regrettable.

So I dont enter the ozbargain phone religious wars I wont say which transition was "successful"

This is one aspect those who have religion for one platform over another just ignore.

    • Thanks! I exactly know what you are saying. I too hate to get into the brand wars. This time its more about the phone models that I am confused between, rather than Android vs iOS. But do respect your point!

I understand, but choosing between the two handsets is about the OS as each only runs on the respective OS

        • I was a big iPhone user and everything was Apple except laptops, we had ipads, iphones etc but then I've noticed that iPhones are getting worse and worse

        • @JayJayAU: Android guy reporting in: I wouldn't exactly say iPhones are getting worse and worse, I would just say that they are getting lazy, reusing the same device each year while everyone else is actually making an innovative phone. iPhones were good back in the day, but now times have changed and they aren't the top dog anymore.
And this is coming from someone who hates iPhones.

Do you like change and learning a new OS? Does value for money matter to you? What features of each device matter most to you? It's a personal choice.

The rear fingerprint reader for the s8+ is very clumsy. I went back to pin.

wait for iphone X then make your decision, prices will drop for grey market of both.

    OnePlus 5, highly recommended !

  • Xiaomi Redmi note 5

  • Get a OnePlus top quality or get a Xiaomi Redmi note 4x but the Redmi heats up a little bit and if your playing games etc your battery will go down quiet fast

I went to check them at a shop and just see how I like them for standard stuff like web browsing using a chrome (so it was fair) and… I think it was a good thing to do. I really didn’t like looking at the Samsung screen. It was too sharp for my eyes. I don’t know how iPhone x will fair but right now iPhone 8 has a screen that I find easier to look at and thus use.

Other than the screen I figure with any phone it’s all about what you want out of it. If you use a web browser, phone app, messaging app and calendar as main apps then it doesn’t matter too much what the phone operating system is. If you want some specific apps then operating choice may
    make impact on decisions.

I do fairly ‘generic’ stuff on my phone so I just want a phone that I can use with some speed and a screen I am comfortable looking at.

    • Thanks! Did you manage to use the fingerprint scanner of S8. I find it easy to use in iPhones, especially when you can unlock the phone that is sitting on the desk without having to pick it up.

I didn’t. Like you I like having it on the front.

I currently use 5s and the button on 8 is different. Doesn’t feel as mechanical, felt odd. I think 7 had a similar feel to the button.

I had a look at a few phones that day and it is definitely worth it playing with them to actually know what it may be like to use them. Specs and resolution numbers only mean so much when the phones are close in the numbers. I really didn’t like the ‘edge’ screens. I really liked the extra room on the iPhone plus. I didn’t like the new trend of really tall screens. I am undecided if the bazel is good or bad as at times I rest my thumb on it to hold the phone when I hold it with both hands.

All these little things I think make a big difference.

I've used samsung and iphone's for a few years so I can tell you from my experience with both:
    Samsung:
Pros: great hardware, customizable (albeit time-consuming), nice android only features like dual-app multitasking, awesome screen.
Cons: Lags after a while. Not one of my samsungs (s3, note4, s8) have not lagged after a few months use and I'm not talking about a little stutter, I mean lags of at least 1-2 seconds after registering a touch. There's so many people telling you to clear caches and stuff like that, but why god do I need to even do it if the phone is meant to be the "fastest/best"? If you need something that just works without maintenance, go iPhone.

the finger reader position is awkward. I don't use it these days but I assume you can get used to it after a while.

    iPhone:
Pros: much better optimized, simpler (to some degree), just works
Cons: getting a bit boring, some UI changes are a bit hit and miss.

Current iphone 7 plus user here. It is a great device. As mentioned above 'it just works'..

Everything I need from the phone works as expected, EVERY TIME.. Calls, Texts (including imessage, a huge plus), email, browsing, great camera.

However, it is a REALLY boring phone. The layout hasn't changed since the first iphone apart from things like pressure touch which I never use.

I don't really use finger prints but I do agree that when I am at my desk I don't really want to pickup the phone just to unlock it. Another bonus with the iphone is the 'Lift to turn on' feature which is great. I don't know if the S8 has that but I know the Pixel doesn't. The S8 and Pixel DO have the OLED screens though which has 'Always on' feature that I miss on the iphone.

I also really like the lock screen notifications on the iphone (it just suits me perfectly) while I have to use an app to get similar functionality (full/all messages) on Android. I haven't seen Oreo but the Notifications are supposed to be better there.

One thing I will say about the hardware though, the iphone 7 plus is BIG and HEAVY… Too big… The smaller size is a lot better but only has half the hardware than it's bigger brother.. I am seriously thinking about swapping my Plus model for the smaller version and forego the better camera, screen resolution, etc…

There is a girl on Youtube that talks about swapping from an Iphone to the S8 and she has a lot of good points about all the little things that she has taken for granted on the Iphone that aren't on Android… It does take a little while to get used to swapping of eco systems..

  • iPhone 8 plus

  • Thanks to all for suggestions, really appreciate! Finally I bought LG G6 HD870DS from Ebay 20% deal. Came out to be ~$590.

  • I have the S8 and find it to be one of the best phones I’ve used. That said Samsung’s slow cycle of updating android security patches is making me consider jumping to iPhone (have always used android)

  • Well I have an S8+ that I'm willing to swap for an iPhone 8 if anyone's interested. But memory has to be more than 64gb.

  • Jumping in to share my two cents as recently decided to try the Samsung S8 (telstra deal) after being an iphone user for 5 years. Unfortunately the S8 died in < 2 weeks which gave me a very low confidence, but with everyone raving the android platform (and I didn't mind the look of S8) I decided to give it another chance (aka had a replacement S8 instead of iPhone).

The fingerprint sensor at the rear is not a very good spot in my opinion- it is a little clumsy and sensor sensitivity is a hit and miss. The size is probably borderline to what I'd call big otherwise (doesn't fit into pocket), but I do appreciate the screen size. Functionality is a hit and miss, I have to agree with some comments above that the iPhone just works if you're after some basic functions.

Still early days for me so hopefully Samsung doesn't disappoint, or I'm back to iPhone on the next upgrade.
