Recommend Wool (or similar) Mattress Topper - Making Own Bed

I am looking at buying a simple yet well made queen spring mattress and apply my own top quality wool or similar topper. I will then be able to flip the mattress (to increase its life) and swap the topper when needed.

It should come under the price of a manufacturer combining these for me which can't be changed or flipped.

Can anyone recommend one they have used? Would be good to hear from anyone who has taken this approach too.

Cheers

  • Hi oldbugger,

Almost all mattress these days are non-flipable.

Your idea is sound, to put a topper a mattress and rejuvinate when due.

However, it is a challenge to find a good quality mattress that's two sided.

Maybe buy a cheaper mattress from a good store like 40Winks, Snooze or Bedshed.

Turnover the mattress when the time comes for a new one. Good Luck!

    • Hey Lexus

All the major bedding retailers rarely sell 'flipable' mattresses but many of the smaller independent (sometimes noted as discount) bedding shops do and they are made by the same local company that sell to the big stores.

      Cheers

      • Hey OB

Thanks for the tip. Will look into it next round.

I know from my own research. There are few toppers available.

        1) Memory Foam
        2) Latex
        3) Wool
        4) Regular Foam

You can buy them from Clark Rubber, Snooze, etc.
        Thanks again!!

  • We got a pretty good topper from the outlet store from Tontine in Melbourne. It isn't wool because I'm allergic to wool, even through sheets.

    • Is it on a regular mattress or one with a topper already connected to it? I guess I just want something with good thickness and breathable to a certain extent. I found latex/foam a little warm and uncomfortable.

I think we have the Cloud 9 one, which is really comfortable. Haven't had it over summer yet so can't comment on if it handles the heat.

This one also looks interesting. I haven't used this one so I can't recommend.

If you are interested in this one then Harris Scarf has both the king and Queen on sale.

        • Yeah just looking at these ones. Bit unsure yet the difference between Cloud9 or Coolmax.

How is your one for softness? Would you say it is soft/medium/firm? Any dips yet?

        • @OldBugger: Pretty soft, but because it is squares you don't tend to develop flat spots. I like it but we've had it less than a year so can't really comment on longevity. If you are close to a Harris Scarf you could go look at the Coolmax one; provided they have stock. Got to admit at the Harris Scarf price I'm tempted to get the Coolmax one for summer to try it out.

        • @try2bhelpful: Yeah fair enough. A year and still happy with it is fine by me. Better than spending $2000 on a new bed with mattress topper you can't change.

This Tontine Cloud 9 is real cheap - shame it is King.. wonder if it could still work on a Queen with some overhang.

        • @try2bhelpful: What type of mattress have you got?

        • @OldBugger: We have an ergoflex memory foam mattress. Which I like, but it was hot to sleep on.

I would do a search online for the Cloud 9 and/or contact the tontine people directly. I bought it straight from their outlet store so they may get stock regularly.

        • @OldBugger: The other advantage of a topper is you can take it off and put it through the washing machine. Even with sheets over it you will need to wash these reasonably regularly to remove sweat. I usually wait until the 40 degree days of summer and give my doona, and associated bedding, a wash. YOu need a couple of 40 degree days to get everything to dry thoroughly.

        • @try2bhelpful: just checking out the coolmax one at big w… It's pretty thin!

        • @OldBugger: thanks for the info, might stick with what I have then.
