Turning Old Android Phone into GPS+Dashcam for Free or Cheap?

My old phone has a cracked screen but still works. I have no dashcam or GPS in my car so was thinking I can make a dashcam + GPS out of my old phone for free or paid apps. What is the cheapest option for this kind of setup?

Hmm. I'm assuming you have a Huawei Y550 going by your comment history?

Most phones don't make very good dashcams, and you're better off getting a cheap G1W-C for dashcam duties as they have the proper wide angle lens for the job. Phone cameras have narrow field of view and they tend to overheat when camera is turned on and exposed to the sun.

For GPS, I either use HERE maps but found Google Maps to be mostly superior option. You'll need an internet connection to use most of it's features though, but you can download parts of the map for offline use.

    • Yes the Y550 nice observation. Screen is all cracked up but still works ok. You are right I tried it out recording video sitting on a tripod on the dash and the view is very narrow. Will save up and get a cheap dedicated dashcam. I don't have any data on this phone so need an app that is completely offline will give HERE a go :)

  • For GPS try Waze, I was using Google Maps then Android Auto for a while, neither come close to Waze

    • Cheers will look at it, need offline only though.

A smartphone affixed to the dashboard on a hot summer day. Say, Exploding battery.

    • How common is this? Also the phone would not be laying down flush adjacent like that but rather mounted to the windscreen via suction cup so not directly adjacent to midday sun. I'm imaging the guy playing an intensive 3D game before leaving it there. Would power management prevent this?

      • You generally don't leave lithium batteries in a hot car, but when you're driving you most likely either have windows down or air cond running so I doubt it would be hot enough to start off a thermal runaway.

  • Autoboy Dashcam is the app you are looking for.
But as others mentioned, use it when you are driving and then store it in your glovebox when parked.
