Recommend Me a Gaming Monitor

Hi all,

I have 3 monitors at the moment (few years old using a monitor bracket) and looking to upgrade to a 34 inch-ish curve monitor so more room on my desk and more simple in a way lol.

Main spec:
GPU: gtx 1080ti
Cpu: i7 7700k

Looking at the following so far:

Acer Predator Z35
Acer Predator X34
LG 34UC99-W
Agon AG352UCG

I want something that can handle my gpu while gaming however I am open to smaller screens. Just wondering if there's better out there than the 2 I have narrow down or any of the ones I've listed is good. Appreciate any feedback, budget is $1500.

Asus ROG Swift PG348 is another option.

P5OZZIE brings it down to $1529 delivered from JW Computers, or wait till 20% off and hope they don't price jack it too much.

    • cheers mate, spec wise - do you believe its better than the ones I've listed? (sorta new to monitors)

I think when it comes to 34" curved monitors, it's either the Acer x34 or the Asus PG348.

They are both 1440p displays, GSYNC, 100Hz refresh, IPS - they are very much an end-game curved monitors (for now).

Reasons not to go for other ones:
        Acer Predator Z35 - 1080p display with a 1080ti is stupid.
LG 34UC99-W - Freesync is useless with a NVIDIA card.
Agon AG352UCG - MVA panel which is not as good as IPS in terms of colour and viewing angles, but better response times I guess.

either the Acer x34 or the Asus PG348.

They share the same panel. The PG348 has logo for ambient lighting rather than a strip like the X34 and the stand is uh "interesting". But the PG348 has a joytick controller whereas the X34 has buttons which suck. The PG348 also has the ROG tax - it's usually more expensive than tyhe X34 due to brand name marketing.

          Acer Predator Z35 - 1080p display with a 1080ti is stupid.

The Z35 is a 3440x1440 100Hz VA panel. I haven't been keeping up with reviews but VA can be a lot better for gaming due to contrast which has a larger effect on image quality than IPS. I suspect it's the better monitor over the X34 due to better contrast.

There is a 3440x1440 200Hz HDR ETA Q1 2018 (the date has changed a lot) coming which will blow the X34 and Z35 out of the water.

It looks like the X34 is actually on sale right now for a very good price: https://www.pccasegear.com/products/33715/acer-predator-x34-curved-34in-g-sync-ips-gaming-monitor Actually it looks like most big computer stores have dropped the price for now.

Or cheaper here, but not sure how legitimate this seller is: https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Acer-Predator-X34-34-Ultrawide-Q…

        $1187.50 delivered with code P5OZZIE

I've been intrigued by what using a 34" curved monitor would be like, but some of these are freaking 1080p or only 100hz… think I'll stick with my 27" IPS 1440p 165hz G-Sync.

    • How much? Am in the market for a monitor like OP though doesn't need to be curved or widescreen.

      Specs are similar.

    • What is the model monitor for the 27 inch you've got ?

      • +1

Asus PG279Q - it's pretty great to look at and use.

if you do decide to get a asus pg348….make sure your desk is big enough =x the monitor's stand goes very deep.

Acer Predator X34 or future model

    Ultrawide
    34 inch 3440 x 1440p
    Gsync
    100Hz overclockable
this model is IPS, future is a new type of VA

  • Sorry if this is off topic but I am trying to decide between getting a gaming monitor or TV.

Pros of 4k 55" no HDR TV (Kogan)

    • large 35" compared to 55"
    • $500 AUD compared to $1500 AUD
    • up to 4k 60 fps (compared to 1440p)

Cons of 4k 55" no HDR TV (Kogan)

    • high input lag and response times I think like 30-60ms minimum
    • no G Sync
    • no HDR
    • limited to 60hz no 120-144 hz gameplay
    • picture colour accuracy might not be the greatest

So for 1/3 the price I get 4x screen real estate roughly, 2160p resolution at 60 fps but no HDR, no G Sync, higher input lag or response times, max 60 fps, and maybe not the greatest picture quality or accuracy compared to high-end pc gaming monitors but 1/3 the price.

I know this might not be the greatest solution but am I crazy in wanting to buy a large 4k TV over a pc monitor. If I double my budget I can get HDR and maybe better picture quality equivalent to a pc monitor and possibly lower input lag (though can't confirm this). Still cheaper than these other solutions and larger.

I know most will have their pc on a desk of some sort some may go the console way but imho if this kills two birds with one stone ie media centre, gaming pc and console then I am happy.

Just trying to think what's best for my scenario have got most of my pc build set out just trying to figure out which way to go for my monitor.

If anybody else has opinions or information on this please let me know.

PC gaming monitor vs 4k large TV.

Colour accuracy for photo editing and video editing is not 100% important to me at most I will probably only dabble in it as a very small hobby but nothing major like professionally or even personally for like Facebook, instagram, deviant art, art station or others etc just a quick touch up at best which a normal pc should be able to handle with any of the options above.

    • The size of screen will be determined by how far away from it you plan to sit, being about 50 cm away 27"-34" is the around the sweet spot for size. If you plan to sit 3+ meters away then naturally you would go for some thing much larger. As for the kogan TV's personally i would not touch these with a barge pole due to them being very hit and miss in terms of quality, possibly add some extra cash and go for like a hisense if you determined to use a TV, just make sure that they have a game mode to reduce the input lag down to an almost bearable level. That said a decent monitor can be over clocked (I am running 3x 4k ips pannels at 75hz). For me it would come down to the type of games you play and the activities you do on the computer, so what ever you do most will determine what your needs are. Personally now that i have used ips panels i cant go back to tn or va.

      • I guess I am just thinking if I save on the tv and it is bearable I can get more games or even both consoles and have the best of all worlds.

Especially since usually TV differences well for me are pretty negligible as long as I don't see a better tv which I shouldn't haha lol and the input lag is bearable (under 40ms) I should be fine.

I can save like 500-600 dollars just by doing this if not more and have a decent monitor for simple 4k gaming and also watching some YouTube/twitch and tv etc.

With Xbox One S consoles hovering around $300 or less and PS4's around $400 this should be a good deal or way for me to go I reckon.

Anyways this would be a huge game changer for me from my current 720p 24" TV which can't even detect some HD channels haha lol.

And if I decide to build a pc later it should do it ok because of 4:4:4 chroma subsampling.

With money tight I am trying not to spend too much on the display but I know this is probably one of the most important parts so choosing is tricky.

        • Just a FYI. Input lag on a tv with a good game mode best case scenario is around 60 ms ( if I’m remembering correctly it was one of the Oled ).

As for me mentioning the tvs from Kogan are very hit n miss, I’ve seen 6 purchased in various sizes by my immediate family and friends. 1 was doa, 2 died within 3 weeks of use, the forth lost all sound other than a crackeling sound from time to time. 5th was decent for about 6 months then some sort of green tint washed over most of the screen last one seems to be fine. So as I said I have seen them be very hit n miss in quality, but I’m sure others here would have contradicting experiences. Possibly look at the Aldi ones I know a couple of the models are trash but there are some gems in their panel range ( you would need to look up which exact ones are good. ) that said with Boxing Day coming soon their might be some decent deals out there. But at the moment with the current eBay deals you can grab a hisense 7 series for at 700$ .

        • @Kiato: what size?
