eBay 'PRICE MATCH' Is a Joke

Long story short, wanted to buy this projector from videopro_online ebay
https://m.ebay.com.au/itm/Epson-EHTW5600-Full-HD-Home-Theatr…
priced at $1092+ $22 shipping, the same is $995 free shipping, on videopro online store
https://www.videopro.com.au/p-11113-epson-ehtw5600-full-hd-h….
Had a 3 hour chat with ebay, they want me to buy it first and would give back a voucher for the price difference for the next purchase, was told about this after 2 hours into chat. Rep kept saying they will price match at first but later disconnected my chat and reconnected it in a way that i cannot type a reply.

what are your thoughts and can we launch a ACCC complaint, if this is a dodgy practise.

eBay's policy is like 'Buy from us a price jacked item and we will give you a ebay voucher for the next ebay purchase'

  • ACCC? Who says they're supposed to price match?

    • ebay now has a price match guarantee

  • What price difference do you want? It's $895.60 with PIXELS?

    • If they price match, it would be much cheaper

      • +1

I'm not too sure what you mean, you're paying less on eBay using the coupon, why is there a need for them to price match if it's cheaper on eBay? Isn't the guarantee in place to reimburse you if you pay less elsewhere?

Or are you just trying to double dip with coupon and price match?

        • i mean if it was same price as their online store,it would come down around $800 mark.much better saving.IMHO

        • +2

@Hasslefree: It's called double dipping and it's not how it works. You're trying to get both discounts.

          You can:
          a) Buy now at $1092 with 20% off code =$873.60
          b) wait for 20% off promo to finish and price match for $995 (or hope the ebay price drops lower again after the promo finishes)

        • @dizzle: why cant the price be $995 in the 1st place..forget about code mate.we are talking about same seller same item different prices. i provided the links
Also it ends up around $891 with shipping

        • @Hasslefree:

EBay don't cover the full 20%… Or did you naively think they did?

        • +1

@Hasslefree: eBay take a cut (a big one) from every sale… VideoPro are factoring that cut (likely only a majority of the cut that eBay will take) into their eBay price.

I don't see how this is dodgy practice, the rep seems to be following ebay's price guarantee policy. Have a read of their terms and conditions; it requires you to purchase the item first then they'll launch an investigation into price matching once you've submitted the claim.

    • you buy it at higher price and get a ebay voucher which will expire?? how come it is a price match? just a question

      • It's a price match because you ultimately walk away with a voucher that reimburses you for the difference between what you pay on eBay vs the retailer's store.

And the terms and conditions, if you've read it, won't allow you to double dip with ebay coupons if that was what you were trying to do.

dont have to double dip, if it was similarly priced. also i am here to discuss their terms and conditions and i think they are dodgy asking you to pay more and get a voucher that can only be used on ebay.
Just because they have a policy doesn't mean its good enough.

        • +3

Noones holding a gun to your head to buy it from eBay. If you don't want a voucher, go buy it directly from the retailer's website. You'll end up paying 'price match guarantee' amount. Unless you wanted to double dip but hey, you're happy not to use the PIXEL coupon right, and just want a similar pricing?

There's a reason why the retailer's ebay price is usually higher than the retailer's website. It's not up to eBay to lower the price down, that's up to the retailer.

@charzy: LOL, are you for real??
Price jacking went right into your head and you now think its ok for a seller to jack up the prices.
PIXELS are not the item should be similarly priced..hope you got my point.

        • I don't see how they price jacked it, seeing they were selling at that price on eBay for a whole week BEFORE the sale started yesterday.

You think retailers sell on eBay for free? I seriously cannot fathom what you're trying to argue here.

        • -1

@charzy: Thank goodness you are on track now. we are here discussing about ebay selling practices and its dodgy price match guarantee.

        • +1

Thank goodness we never were as I never said anything about price jacking?

Everyone can see what you're trying to achieve so stop acting like it's your right to tell everyone else what to think.

    • Yep that policy is definitely not good enough. Surely it should be that if you find it cheaper elsewhere eBay should give it to you for free. I mean really they should be doing free delivery and setup as well and chuck in some HDMI cables. Maybe send a second one free just for them having the audacity to allow a more expensive item on their website in the first place. Capitalist pigs amirite?

The terms and conditions are quite clear on the website, that you'll get a voucher. The offer is above and beyond what ACL requires of them.

What about the promos from Boost Juice where you have to wear a costume to get a free drink? Is that dodgy?

  • +1

u gotta factor in that the seller has to pay ebay fees… whereas on their own site they won't
either way the seller has to eat the transaction fees too - u can't win it all

the same will apply when they list on amazon, there will still be listing fees

Yeah I noticed the same thing with Warehouse1. They were selling the Vega 56 GPU on their site for about $660, and then on eBay for $830. With the 20% promotion at the time the price was borderline the same, so no real benefit.

  • Has anyone tried using price match in the following scenario.

Buy product from a retailer giving 20% off, then a few days later after the offer is over, when prices "drop" back to normal, try and do a price match to get that little bit more "back" from ebay ?
