TRS when leaving Australia on a cruise

Sorry guys quite new to understanding the TRS.

I'm in Sydney - As I understand it I need to travel international in order to make a claim on the item - let's say a laptop. But that I'm not supposed to bring the item back.. But that this is often not checked on return to Australia so I should be relatively OK bring it back in?

Question I have is would a cruise to NZ or somewhere else close by (but outside Australian waters) still allow my to claim the item refund via TRS? And if so is there a TRS office or point or representation at the terminal?

You're mistaken about not being able to bring them back. It's fine to bring it back.

You claim at the point of embarkation. The TRS website has all the info you need. First result when you google it.

You're not supposed to bring them back, or if you do, pay back the GST you were reimbursed when leaving, which defeats the whole purpose. Of course, people do it anyway. Depends how strict customs agents are. If you made a TRS claim, you're flagged for potential inspection, so make someone else hold your item, or check it in.

Partly correct, you are permitted to bring back up to $900 worth of goods, and if you are travelling with others you can pool your resources, so a family can do much more. As mentioned on the site you linked to.
