Best travel deals - Japan (flights, accom etc)

Hi OzB community,

Long time member but inactive poster.

I am looking to travel to Japan during the Jan/Feb period but can't seem to find any good deals for flights (Jetstar $1000+ return ~mid Jan outbound MEL, early feb inbound). Hoping to find something around the price range of ($400-$700 return).

Would appreciate it if anyone here can share on any deals they might be aware of, from flights to accommodations etc. Any tips/suggestions on how to be a smart traveller there would be great too!

Cheers,

  • dont know where you are getting +$1000.
    jetstar 20/1 - 8/2 $842 + fees and baggage
    jetstar 19/1 - 6/2 $846 + fees and baggage
    etc. didnt eve try.

    • Skyscanner

      Depart before 16/1

  • accommodation - how many people? -approx ages. all from one family? i.e. happy to share?

generally I'd say airBnB for Japan. it's what I do when I go there with my 3 kids as family rooms are expensive/uncommon.

    • The plan is to travel solo for now :)

Do you think Airbnb works well for solo travelling too?

      • yeah, if it was just me travelling then I'd go for a private room.

aside from one crappy house (managed by a non-japanese person -the house had potential but was lacking), I've had nothing but very good/awesome Japan AirBnB experiences.

  • There was a deal posted here a few weeks ago

Outside of Tokyo and Kyoto, accommodation in Japan is not that expensive IMO. The big chains MyStayz, Daiwa Roynet, etc, are usually reasonably priced and reliable.

In Tokyo, I like to stay not too far from the JR Yamanote Line (the line that circles the city) because it makes getting around pretty easy. Even better if you stay near where it intersects with the Chūō-Sōbu Line so you can cut through the city too. That's the Akihabara area on one side or the Shinjuku area on the other. They are both very different areas though!

Osaka is a cheaper base than Kyoto for visiting the cities in the middle (Himeji, Nara, Kobe, etc) but you have to go to Kyoto too because it's amazing. I like Hiroshima too (not everyone does but it's worth it just for Miyajima island). Takayama also good, stay at Shibu Onsen and see the snow monkeys, Hakone is nice and very close to Tokyo. A JR pass is worth it if you're going to a lot of cities and often it's best to work it so that you spend some time in Tokyo and then activate the pass when you're leaving to visit the rest of the island (so you buy it for only 2 weeks instead of 3).

    • How best to reach Takayama?

I am traveling to Japan for the first time (for 10-11 days) in April and I plan to go to Tokyo, Kyoto and probably Osaka, with a couple of day-trips to places like Haneko, Nara, Nikko etc within that duration. I am confused if I should try to fit Kanazawa/ Takamaya/ Kawaguchi and Ainokura/ Ogimachi in the itinerary though it will mean that I will have fewer days in Tokyo. And will we need a hired car if we want to drive to those places? What do you recommend to the first timer? We do have a 5-yr old kid with us.

Current plan is to spend 6-8 days in Tokyo, 4-5 days between Kyoto and probably a day in Osaka.

      • it depends on how do you like your trip would be. Do you want just a glimpse of everything, or do you want to enjoy more of less things? I personally like to enjoy more of every single city. So on my first trip to Japan, I think I had 5 days Tokyo, 4 days Kyoto and 5 days Osaka. Kyoto def needs 4 or 5 days if you want to enjoy all. Maybe cut your Tokyo days to 5 days so you can get at least 2 days in Osaka.

Kanazawa, Takayama, Shirakawa-go area needs at least 3 days to completely explore everything.

    • As long as you don't stay in Shirakawa-go, everything is expensive lol
