Samsung Galaxy Note 8 - Discussion Thread

Hey all,

Purchased a note 8 from Optus recently after waiting for it for forever (from my Note 4 - was meant to go to Note 7, but we all know how that ended).

Anyway I realized that I have a lot of questions about it and it seems as though enough people here purchased this phone and maybe want to start sharing their tips / tricks. My questions so far:

1) Has anyone received their Samsung Wireless Charger from the promotion? I got an e-mail saying my claim had been approved and that it would be sent within 30 days (Oct 12) and that another email with a tracking number would be sent - no such luck.

2) Are you all getting screen protectors for your Note 8? I know we have the screen assure, but I realized recently that what if I got a pretty major scratch on its beautiful screen - I would have to break it within the first year to get it replaced :S Maybe it's best to get a screen protector - for those who have gotten one, any good suggestions of where to get them / get them installed?

3) What are your favorite apps / usage / tips and tricks with the Note 8? So far I've tried Daydream on it and it's pretty schmick, and making the little gifs to send to friends. Haven't really quite used a lot of the stylus features as of yet, but I think I'm going to get the Adobe Cloud thingo to try on it.

Feel free to add whatever questions you have below so we can get a discussion going - hope we get to learn cool new things (or just hear comments from Apple fanbois. :P )

  • Of course as I post this an e-mail comes in from Samsung - expected delivery of the wireless charger is tomorrow! Will update as soon as I receive it at work!

  • Haha. That would be right. I still haven't heard anything further than a message saying there has been a delay in the claim review. So I haven't even had confirmation of acceptance yet. Not that I can see any reason why it would be denied.

I'm using a screen protector for the reasons you give, even minor scratches. I don't plan on breaking a screen and risking other damage just so I can get a screen replacement. Doesn't make a lot of sense to me but anyway…

Apart from that, It's a huge upgrade from my Note 4. :-)

    • Where'd you get your screen protector from?

If you go for a screen protector, avoid the gel-based ones. They show the S-Pen marks.

    • So I'm assuming you mean get a glass-based one? Instead of gel? Do you suggest a particular brand/seller?

      • Yeah, definitely glass. I got my phone early and the local phone stores only had gel-based protectors. It hasn't quite annoyed me enough to change yet though.

As for sellers, I've never had issues with the booths that sell phone cases in shopping centres. I'm terrible at putting protectors on.

I got this screen protector from JB Hifi.

Only chose this one as it was all they had in stock and I wanted it that day.
Quite expensive at $40 and isn't as smooth as a glass based protector. Did go on nicely though and you wouldn't even know you had a protector by looking at it, fits nicely with the stock clear case and isn't lifting anywhere.

I'm not going to go out of my way to recommend it though, I prefer the feel of a glass protector and it isn't a bargain at $39.95 (and that's why we are here right? ) :-)

I got a cheap $11 tempered glass screen protector from eBay. It adheres to the top and bottom of the screen and makes it difficult to swipe down from the top of the screen.
I also got this case which is quite nice IMO. http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Galaxy-Note-8-Case-Genuine-SPIGEN…

  • If anyone wants a note 8 pm me i can get you a good price

    1. Still haven't got my wireless charger yet.

    2. I've never used a screen protector before, but had cracked the Note8 screen after just a couple of weeks of having the phone! Thank god for Samsung Assure. So now i've ordered a $4-5 glass screen protector from GearBest to try it out, with no idea what it'll be like. I've also been wondering if a thin but soft case would give more protection than the hard case that came with the phone…

    3. Here are some tips i've come across to improve unlocking speeds:

      • Iris scanner - enable option to unlock without having to swipe.
      • Pin - enable option to enter the pin without having to hit 'Enter'.
      • Fingerprint scanner - no need to press a button to turn the screen on first - simply touch the scanner while the screen is off and it'll unlock. After discovering this by accident i find this the quickest way to unlock in most situations.
      • I also use unlock with my voice which seems to work well so far, for times i need the phone to do something while locked and handsfree.
      • I also have my car as a trusted device so i don't need to unlock it while it's connected to my car's bluetooth. This has also been around for ages and i've always found it useful.

:O Now that you've used your screen assure wouldn't you spend more on a better screen protector?

What happened, how'd you crack it?

The wireless charger is great - I have also bought a couple of the Blitzwolf wireless chargers, and I find that the Samsung charges faster than these (I think). The Samsung one is also super big compared to the blitzwolf.

I only use the fingerprint unlock, I think I'll have to test the other methods - the voice one seems like a good thing to have.
