Credit Card Surcharge - Worth Paying?

Hi

I use my NAB Credit Card on over most of my purchases but hesitate to use it wherever I see Credit Card surcharge sign i.e council rates, Aldi's?, certain shops.

Wondering do people in Ozbargain pay the surcharge for the sake of accumulating frequent flyer/reward points?

Is it worth it if you have offset/saving account?

Just wondering on people's thoughts on this.

  • Good question. I just got approved nab cc and need to spend $2500 to get $500 worth cash back. I shop small items only so I will have to pay bills (and pay surcharge). Otherwise no I don't want to use cc if not free of surcharge.

Depends on the surcharge amount and points. And what other benefits are applicable (travel insurance, purchase protection, chargeback protection). And finally depends on the safety, fees, convenience of alternative payment options (eg, I'm pretty leery about Poli)

You just have to do the maths and work out what the points are worth to you.

In general paying the surcharge is not worth it just for points, especially these days with the global lowering of the value of points.

Surcharges are lower these days as well. Thanks to the new ruling to only pass the cost price of merchant fees

If you're just buying a snack from Aldi then it might be worth just paying the surcharge rather than trying to remember your pin just to save 1.5 cents.

  • if you need spend to qualify go for it. some fools arguing that it's not worth it but really they are just fools.

It depends on the surcharge and the value of your points. Your points could be worth up to 3% of your spending, but typically around 1%. It's also depends on other benefits that come with your card eg. price protection, travel insurance, phone screen insurance, chargeback, statement credits.

Also the value of the free interest period to you.
