Layover Time Required for Domestic Leg after International Flight

G’day ozBargainers,
I am looking at booking flights from New York City (USA) to Calgary (Canada) and would have a layover in Toronto (Canada). I am wondering how customs processes etc work with this type of flight, essentially, whether I would need to clear customs when arriving at Toronto, or whether you pass straight through Toronto and clear customs at your final destination. The layover time would be 2h20m and both flights booked on the same ticket with the same airline. I haven’t travelled an international leg like this and just want to make sure I’m allowing enough time.
Thanks heaps

You will be fine. As it is the same airline they will make sure you will get to your destination, even if there are delays. But 2h20min is more than sufficient.

  • You will need to clear customs at Toronto.

Given its on the same airline, then they will ensure you make it or put you on the next flight, no worse off that you would be if you changed your connecting flight now.

Plus if you get through on time, you wont have to wait around.

As for making it, who knows. If you get caught up in customs, immigration while highly unlikely, this can happen. Just make sure your last name isnt linked to cocaine cassie

Relax, enjoy your trip and remember airlines, customs etc are all part of fun of the travel experience.✈️

  • You clear customs on your first port of call as you will be flying domestic after that. Your airline should book your luggage all the way to final destination but you will probably have to collect your luggage and drop it off for transfer to the next flight, ask at checkin how this works. That is certainly what we have had to do in the past. If you have boarding passes for both flights just check the gate number when you get off the international flight and head straight there so you have time to deal with anything that might arise.

We had a great time in Canada, did the rocky mountaineer train, did a cross country sleeper, Niagara Falls is wonderful, if you ignore the town. Enjoy the trip.

  • As others have said, you will have to clear customs in Toronto, and as it is booked all the way through on the same ticket, it won't be an issue.

Something else though, Canadian customs will probably be quick and easy. When I went through, it felt like I was just a local. Easy and friendly staff to talk to, and took no time at all.

Just be aware Canada now requires an electronic visa - Australians never needed to get a visa previously, however Canada has gone down the same path as the USA with an electronic visa.

  • Same airline, same ticket … no worries.
