Geek Buying Rip off Warranty Wants $47.42 US for Repair

Just interested has any one else had a warranty claim through Geek Buying.

Story: Bought Redmia 4A never had good reception regardless of Sim Card
mobile provider. From googling looked like a bad modem in phone.

Contacted GB said send back. Done.
I get the reply below:

*Confirmation from our colleague that some small components need
to be changed . As you can see " motherboard & screen is not in the scope of this free repair policy" according to our company's return policy

The total cost is USD72.42,including USD 25 handing fee .
And ,we will afford the handing fee for you .
So, you will be charged USD47.42"*

Anyone else had GB warranty dealings ?
Thinking, they can keep it, and never buy from GB again.
I assume everything is on the motherboard so warranty from GB is
basically useless.
Xiaomi replied they are not an authorized reseller.

Lesson learnt but a warning to others about Geek Buying.
regards
BH

I read this somewhere on forums - Buy Chinese phones cheap and don't expect any warranty. If you want good phone and good service, buy branded phones.

Another response was - Customers are paying upfront for service and repairs for branded phones while Chinese phone makers do not charge these costs. So no repairs ,just use and throw. You might be lucky without issues.

All Chinese products are hit and a miss. So better luck next time.

          @boo hoo:

I see. If that is the case then i may have some bad news for you. Its my understanding that China's law on the protection of the rights and interests of consumers gives consumers "a period of six months from the date of receipt to return defective goods."

Grey import - just assume I’ll make my usual comments about warranty issues and lack of accountability and procedures for redress.

There’s a business model out there for an onshore company to guarantee to coordinate with the offshore companies to cover repair of devices. The get a percentage per device cost and the are a POP the user can go to.

I do hope you get your phone fixed though.

    • That destroys the business model entirely - the only reason to get grey imports is because they're cheaper. They're cheaper because they don't have the same warranties/convenience. If you add those…. likely that costs/price going to match up with official imports.

      • It depends on how the repairs are co-ordinated and/or managed. I still think it is a model that might work provided the overseas providers are actually onboard. A sort of POP for Australia for these groups.

Been burned by them before, so they're on my personal Nope list. But you can try PMing @Clear, they might be able to help, if you haven't done so already.

    • Thanks NoPants.. I will do, I think I saw @clear get a mention the other day. re GB

TBH, I don't rate your chances much after 6 months but gotta be worth a shot, eh. Hope you get your phone sorted! :)

How much did you buy the phone for initially? My general rule of thumb is - if repair costs exceed half the value of the phone, it is better to replace.
