Auspost Keeps Safe Dropping Parcels That Aren't Supposed to Be

I recently found a trend where all of my deliveries were being left on my front porch where anyone could take it. Now, if these items were like small and <$10 I wouldn't really mind as that would save me a trip to the Post Office, but my recent deliveries have been computer components that are easily hundreds of dollars individually.

The thing is, I logged into my MyPost account to check all these deliveries and all of them say:

Safe Drop - unavailable
The sender has requested that you sign for this parcel. If no one is home you can collect it from a local Post Office.

My question is, if my item was to be stolen by someone when I'm at work, who's to cop the bill?

  1. Would I be entitled to open a Paypal dispute for "item not received"?

  2. Would I be left with the responsibility of getting compensation from AusPost given that the seller has already done whatever they can - tracking, signature on delivery etc?

P.S. On the tracking, it says "Delivered with Safe Drop".

Also, is there anything I can do to stop this from happening? For parcel deliveries, this is not my daily Postman so I don't even see/know this person at all since I'm not home or they don't ring the bell when I am.

        • I don't see why they can't just keep doing that!

          Safe drop reduces costs.

        • @whooah1979:

I'm all good with safedrop for items not costing >50-100 dollars. Easier for me and the delivery man.

Bigger issue is if they say they'll take it to the post office if I'm not home then just dump and run.

Auspost is to blame. I had a parcel that was $150 worth (limited edition figurine haha). I received notification it was delivered on a day but I looked everywhere around my house and could not locate the parcel. I was left dumbfounded. Few days later it’s at my door step on a Saturday and the parcel says signature required. I never signed it nor has anyone else in my household. It’s dodgy as, I reckon they are just trying to meet their KPIs. I was fuming because if it was stolen I would of been angry! I was so confused as well after all that!

i installed cctv for this very purpose. they use to make squiggles to sign off on their own.
they've stopped now after a complaint.

When nobody is available to accept a delivery our couriers will try to put the package in a safe place away from prying eyes

And you think you've got problems - lol

  • As an occasional seller on eBay I might have to start putting a "do not safe drop" label on parcels of higher value

  • I had my new phone stolen/ dropped off when it was supposed to be signed for.
Item was delivered by Auspost contractor and was a new expensive phone.
Seller had paid for signature on delivery and the postman says it was signed for on the electronic tracking system but no one left a note or anything and I had been away on claimed day of delivery.

I told seller I did not sign for it and was worried I'd never see phone or money for phone ever again.
Pretty quickly (within 2 days) I got a call from the delivery company (it was FedEx using a contractor actually) asking the details.

They said it was their fault and driver had claimed he had my signature but when asked for evidence could not produce my signature.
So they told seller they'd pay for new phone and seller sent me a new one within the week.

    • So it was fedex contractor or auspost? Or both? 👥

      • FedEx consignment streamed to Ap for last mile?

      • FedEx were the ones who rang so maybe it was both?
Come to think of it they never mentioned Auspost so Auspost might have had nothing to do with it :)
But it was handled pretty well.

  • I think you’ll find that safe drops will continue and will increase, especially with the launch of amazon and the increase in delivery volume . The amazon no signature required threshold in the US is $1000, as it’s just not worth the time and effort. If a package does get stolen or not delivered they just send another one, no questions asked. Which is why things like this happen:

However most people are honest and on an unrelated note I’m excited for amazon to launch, and we will be in for a whole new standard of customer service. Australian customer service and consumer expectations are among the worst I’ve seen anywhere. We need to be more demanding as consumers.

Nike in the US lets you WEAR and try out your shoes and return them for any reason within 30 days. (The returned shoes get donated to the needy)

  • Depending on the value of an item and where it was bought Aus Post may compensate you. I was compensated $50 after a $55 parcel I sent, with tracking was lost. The tracking showed the parcel stalled and not moving and upon further investigation "couldn't be located". In general it is always important to raise an enquiry with Aus Post and have open communication with them in addition to eBay/PayPal enquiries to strengthen your position.

  • Please complain to the call centre and the sender. I know it sucks that you need to do that but the delivery driver is in the wrong here. If it's a "DO NOT SAFE DROP" article then the sender has specifically requested it and it should be adhered to. There's a lot of customers that specifically request FOR a delivery to be safe dropped (it's low value, they'll be home soon, they have a secure property) but they need to trust that it will happen only when they request it.

    • "DO NOT SAFE DROP" article

Do not safe drop is linked to the elad and checked by the mc67na. The mc67na will allow the article to be safe dropped if this these instructions aren't in the system.

  • It really is incredible that OZPost can get away with this, there should be an option to opt out of this awful so called Safe Drop its not SAFE DROP at all - or some authority should stamp it out. I called them and was told its up to the driver to decide! really.. bloody ridiculous. I send about 2.5K satchels PA and have had enough, so moving more and more away from them using couriers, so IMO this Safe Drop is a fail.

this has happened to me OP where my item was stolen. nobody does anything and i had to take the loss. it was bs.

ebay 30 day policy did not apply because it was a preorder they wouldn't do anything and then scummy paypal kept on saying that AP had it marked as delivered and seller did not care. it was a medium sized business that i bought from.

  • At least you are getting the parcels. I had one which showed delivered (Syd-Mel) but never was. Called AP 10+ times over the space of 6wks and then parcel miraculously showed up!
