LOL at the Perth price, when all other fares stop in Perth for the same flight anyway

    • Yup quite humorous!

  • Any reason why Perth to Cape Town is more expensive than for the eastern states which fly via Perth?

    • +3

There's a reason why SAA only fly from Perth. Large SA expat population, hence demand higher.

    • They charge what they can get away with - I'd say it's because of the high South African expat community in Perth in this case and there's also less competition. From other cities, passengers have the option of going via Sydney with Qantas.

The price of airfares isn't that correlated to the distance travelled, in general.

    • Because the travel dates are very different.

      • deleted and added to main thread.

    • From what we can see by the pricing history we have on these routes, the daily best price out of MEL or SYD is usually around $1400-$1450 where PER is closer to $1650.

  • This is a very good price, paid nearly $400 more than for just the return flight to Joberg last year from Melb.

Smart traveller recommends a high degree of caution for tourists to south africa. My friends who live there say there is an increase in robberies against tourists and crime is increasing. I know there has always been crime problems but just thought I'd share.

I think the word 'caution' should apply to most countries these days. Always keep your guard up wherever you are. That being said, South Africa is one of the most incredible places on earth. So many things to do and the scenery is spectacular. Wildlife is next level to

        Some more than others though…

New Zealand and Japan are both relaxing destinations where being robbed is less of a concern than back in Australia.

Went to SA in September. Cape town was perfect. Didn't once feel unsafe…ubered it everywhere. Did Jo'burg for a couple of days. I wouldn't wonder around by myself there.
      Safari was great.

    • Yes please stay away from cape town, I like to know it’s the worlds best kept secret…

    Too dangerous.

    • why?

        They've made the Top 10 list…

If you don't think it's more dangerous to travel to South Africa than most other countries, then go ahead and go… I won't be going though.

        They're doing even better here…

I lived in South Africa and even visiting is scary, people drive at 160+ km/h with no regard for others. You will be killed for a mobile phone. Definitely do no wear jewellery in public. We had to take overseas health cover and insurance as you are hospitals are death trap. There is a reason I left all those years ago.. and seeing it this year it's so much worse.
The president has 783 criminal charges against him and has not seen a single day in court..if that's any indication

          @KevinFine:

I know quite a few families that have left for exactly those reasons. They do not want to bring up their kids in that environment and have migrated to Australia.

I also have a friend who is living and working there now, but wants to leave. He's had enough. Last year, his in-laws who live there were invanded, tied up and robbed.

@KevinFine: you should be taking out insurance for any o/s trip
