Car Hire - Adelaide

Hi,
Just wondering if anyone can recommend to me a car rental company in Adelaide?
I have found Avis, Hertz, Thrifty, Budget etc and there are a ton of program codes but not sure which one is the cheapest.
Thanks in advance.

  • Normally I'm a fan of thrifty (mel + syd), but I found the staff at the airport to be clueless at ADL airport.

Rented a XR6 for a weekend getaway. Staff gave me a Kluger, and said it's the same because "they are both 6 cylinders".

  • Just booked 3 day car hire for Adelaide with Thrifty online. Not sure about their customer service at the airport but found them to be the cheapest/best option for us (Wed-Sat hire, 2 drivers, small car):

    • used NRMA membership number (discounted rates; noticed that if you enter both your NRMA number and a Thrifty promo coupon code, the hire rates are higher so just used NRMA)
    • free additional driver when using NRMA membership number (doesn't appear on the Thrifty checkout but is stated elsewhere on both Thrifty & NRMA website)
    • did not take out their optional excess reduction insurance (this is included with my ANZ credit card; if you have any premium c/c's, you should look at the travel insurance inclusions as ANZ reduces the excess to $350 if you pay with the card)
    • earned some Velocity points (enter card number at checkout)
    • $200 security bond deposit (low compared to some others)

I'm sure there are some slightly better deals around but Thrifty worked out best for us this trip. Due to a previous bad experience with another company (where c/c was charged for 'damage' months after the hire), I now always video the car at pick up and drop off.

Good luck and have a great trip.

    • thanks for the tips. unfortunately i'm not a nrma member but will video the car when i pickup and dropoff. is the other company which charged you for damage avis, budget or hertz?

  • Depending on what sort of driving you need to do and where you will be located, consider these people. They have cars for hire for about $35/day, I think with some kilometre restrictions. The cars are basic things like older model Kia Ceratos, but are certainly cheap. We have rented from them when moving house and our guests have hired their cars before. Wherever you go make sure you get travel insurance prior so that you can avoid the extremely overpriced insurance excess reductions that the rental companies offer
