Christmas Flight Prices

Do any OZB experts have any thoughts regarding airline ticket prices over the Christmas period.

Work circumstances mean that my only option for a family holiday is Boxing Day for about a week.

Looking to travel to Bali as it is close, cheap and we have been there before so can just relax without needing to tick off all the must see locations.

In the last 2 weeks prices have really spiked for ADL-DPS. They had been up and down for the weeks proceeding but now are just high all the time. Is there a pattern to the pricing? I remember reading something once that around 60 days out was the best time to buy for peak times and then they improve again about 45 days out but I'm really not sure on the science of it all and if I should just bite the bullet and book so I don't spend my days on the booking sites trying to save?

  • DPS to ADL New Years Eve is $130 with DeathStar

  • Prices from about 15 December to 15 January are high by default, as airlines know that's the time most Australians have off both school and work. It's just the way it goes. Supply and demand, etc. I would book as soon as you see an attractive price you're prepared to pay.

Yeah I have a feeling I missed the boat on reasonably priced airfares. I've been holding off on booking because of the volcano situation but that seems to have subsided somewhat now and some insurance companies have begun covering again. I have all the usual price watch sites setup so will just wait and see for another week I guess. I don't think the prices can get much more ridiculous. Unfortunately it's a situation of no holiday for another year if we don't go so I will just have to suck it up……just goes against the grain for an ozbargainer paying single ticket prices for what the 4 of us have traveller for before

I think you may be in for shock in a weeks time.
The chances of a last minute heavily discounted fare for your preferred travel period is slim.

        How many people are travelling?
Are you prepared to make transfers at SIN or KLIA?

Have you had a look at the availability and cost of accom?

        • Don't get me wrong I'm not expecting heavily discounted at this point just watched it spike by about $500 per ticket in the last 2 weeks so was just the bargain hunter in me struggling with that :)

2 Adults & 2 Kids (5&3) Ideally would prefer no transfers as it is so much harder with young kids but won't rule it out. Accomodation has been booked for months and can be cancelled at last minute if needed.

        • @mike-77:

          SOunds about right.

If you can figure out flights to Perth,
          Perth to DPS on Malindo 25.12.17 6:10pm $278pp ($1112)

          DPS to ADL direct
          31.12.17
          Jetstar $130ish pp

Not ideal dates, but the flights are cheap for a reason.

Beyond that you are looking at $850 + pp

  • I usually recommend buying before November, I reckon once it hits the November month, people start to realise how close they are to Christmas and there's a surge in prices, while in October it still sounds a while away. If there is any point for prices to go down, I'd think it would be by the third week of November? But I base that on absolutely nothing lol. At which point the price go's up and up until Christmas.

This could be completely wrong but thats how I imagine the prices go.

  • no deals around at xmas time, you left it way too late looking for 'cheap' deals!

  • Thanks for all the input. I knew I'd never get cheap but up by $500 per ticket from Adelaide to Bali in the last couple of weeks killed me. They were already much higher than what I'd normally pay for a flight but that damn volcano not deciding what it was going to do.

Oh well it is what it is, just wasn't sure if I'd see those prices dip to the level of a couple of weeks ago (which were already high)

  • around $963.84 AUD pp
