Camera for My 10 Year Old Daughter

Hey Guys,

I'm looking for a recommendation.

My daughter's about to turn 10 and wants a digital camera.

She wants something fairly small to carry around.

My budget is Under $200 (around $150 is good).

My preference is waterproof, dust-proof and shockproof.

The ability to take MP4 movies is a must.

Also good battery life, or a replaceable batter, so I can buy a spare to carry around.

Thanks in advance.

older model GoPro might be a go - but the interface is rather terrible.

iPod Touch with a waterproof case would be nicer.

Has been mentioned before… My advice (again) ask around family/friends for P+S Cameras that are gathering dust on shelves or in cupboards.

I've got like 1 or 2 sitting around doing nothing. Still very capable cameras but since mobile phones evolved, there's been no need for the p+s.

So yeah, ask around, don't buy 1 :)

    • Good call, lithium ion batteries swell and die if they go totally flat or just get old anyway. There will also be a lot of ipods bricking themselves on shelves over the next few years. The worst are PSP and Amazon Kindle batteries. Total junk. Use them while they last.

The Lumix waterproof ones are great. Good pics and movies, my mum and I have both been very happy with ours. Lots of fun in the water, just make sure she knows how important it is that it is properly sealed before getting it wet.

You get 20% off at Good Guys with the ebay deal at the moment taking it down to $160. Think the deal ends tonight though.

    • Thanks I was looking at that. I wondered if not having a zoomable lens is an issue?

It's a bit annoying at times when you do want a zoom, but we don't really miss it for what we use the cameras for (beach, pool, park etc).

The specs say it has 4x optical zoom as does this review. I think it's just designed so the lens doesn't protrude.

  • I got her the Panasonic Lumia. Thanks for the input guys.
