Is Applecare for iPhone X worth It?

I just per-ordered the new iPhone X 256Gb and unsure if I should get AppleCare+.

I have owned most iPhone models from the 4 onward and never saw value in Applecare however after learning a screen replacement on this model will cost $419 https://support.apple.com/en-au/iphone/repair/service/pricin… it has got me thinking.

For those that don't know, AppleCare+ is a sort of insurance, cost is $299 for two years and allows you to replace the screen for $45 or $149 for any other damage (up to two times max).

I personally do not like covers on phones and feel any cover may interfere with the wireless charging as well as take away from the aesthetics.

For reference, I have damaged my current phone three times, twice by dropping and cracking the screen and once by water damage (flipped a jetski). All phones prior I never had an issue.

Thoughts?

Edit: added a poll, what is the best way to protect my phone

buy the phone using a particular credit card with screen replacement insurance.

    • I purchased the phone on Telstra plan.

      • Pay for it using a card such as an American Express.

Quote…. Smartphone Screen Insurance for screen repairs if you accidentally break your Smartphone screen. We will reimburse you for the cost of the screen repair up to $500 with a 10% excess per claim3

you know replacing the back of the phone counts as other damage and costs more to replace than the screen?

  • Sounds expensive

Do you have home contents insurance? Not sure if I have the best deal, but I pay $560 per annum for $60,000 cover.

Importantly, it includes portable contents cover. General portable contents is $1000 per item, $5000 per claim.

We've claimed once for a screen repair through Apple on my wife's iPhone 6S. No excess and premium didn't go up.

    • Wow, I will look into my policy now. Thanks.

Also, pretty sure with mine I have the option to list items in "specified portable contents" (e.g. if I'm worried items that cost over $1000 could get lost or stolen out and about), but I haven't bothered to list anything…I think when I first did the quote I added my wife's engagement and wedding rings…it added to the premium significantly, so I took them off.

        • Do you mind tell me who your insurer is? Our Contents Insurance doesnt have those benefits…

        • @twobit: https://www.qbe.com.au/home-insurance/contents-insurance

I told a lie, technically you have to select portable contents on the quote (I'm doing one again now online)…but I remember doing it twice (with and without) and it didn't change the premium. I was pretty happy when there was no excess to claim on portable contents and the premium didn't go up the next year either!

haha, so you have to choose zero portable contents excess (which I did at the time). Sorry, it has been a few years since I did it.

@John Kimble: thanks. Turns out ANZ resells QBE so maybe I do have the same cover. Its due for a renewal in 30days so good timing.

        • @twobit: Maybe! Check your fine print though I suppose!

  • May be Apple will follow Samsung and offer a screencare option for preorders, god knows, they have the money to do that lol!

  • Just remember Apple Care doesn't cover theft or loss of phone.

I would prefer mobile phone insurance through the telcos

I've got one coming, and with stupid cost of screen repairs for this model, I think I'll bite the bullet and get Applecare+

  • If you are going to spend that kind of money on a phone, and you consider yourself a klutz, then by all means get it.

  • I used to get Applecare+ for my phone (only claimed once), but this time I am going to use the Amex essential insurance ( I also pre-order the iPhone X). However, I reckon you need to get a case (iPhone X is glass back and front).

  • Wouldn't you be up for your excess with home contents insurance claim, usually $500.00…. Apple care would be cheaper in the long run

    • I chose $0 excess for my portable contents when I signed up.

  • Can get “Vurtual Apple Care” by buying from JB Hifi (1 year Apple Warranty + 1 additional year JBHF warranty cover) Buy phone with ANZ Platinum Visa Credit Card and get one year additional warranty over and above the other two years. Same as Apple care and Platinum Card is free for first year and I think $89/ year thereafter. The insurance cover comes from QBE and you get oversea Travel insurance with some hoops to go through for that I may add - check the small print for travel ins: Such things as you must pay for your travel expensive for your trip incl return journey of >$500 before departure. This is by far the best solution for virtual Apple Care I could find.

    • Thanks for the suggestion however I have already pre-ordered through Telstra.
