Cheap Storage Melbourne Area for Furniture

We are currently looking for some cheap storage outside the Melbourne area for at least 2 years.

Has anyone found a storage facility that they thought was good value? Everything in Melbourne seems quite expensive, due to land costs I suppose but I thought if I went out a bit , it should be cheaper. I have had no luck so far though.

  • I've used Hippo Self Storage in the past. http://hipposelfstorage.com.au/

They don't have 24/7 access and basically you rent a container for however long you want. They were much cheaper than the other places when I last looked.

    • Any company that uses @gmail as a company email address loses significant trust.

      • I understand your position. My experience with Hippo was good. I believe it might just be someone's weekend side business as I think they are only open on weekends. Also, they refunded me unused time without my asking; which gives them a big tick from a customer service perspective. And, you bring your own lock for the container. They could also use a bolt cutter to cut it off; but we had no issues with them - our locks were still on the container when we went back to retrieve our stuff.

  • Thanks MrH I have sent them an email. Do you remember how much it was for a container?

    • Sorry, I went back over my emails; but can't find their quote. I paid $190; but can't remember the time period that was for.
They also gave me a $50 refund when I took our stuff out of storage earlier as our renovations were complete. That was a complete surprise as I was not expecting anyone would have refunded anything as we had a contract for a certain period.

  • Depends on what you are storing? Boxes, boats? cars? House full of furniture?

    • storing furniture

      • unless its something 'special', you're best to sell it, bank the money, put the money saved on 'storage' and buy new when you're ready.

Say your $2k couch, sell it for $500, bank the $50/month saving in storage fees, gives you $1700 to put towards a new 'couch'.

Basically is the value of the 'stuff' stored MORE or LESS than the cost of storage? ie You rent a storage locker at $100/m, is the value of the goods worth $2400?

You rent one at $200/m, is the value of the goods worth $4800?

If not, sell everything, bank the money and storage savings.

        • understand what you are saying. It depends on what we can get the storage costs down to as to whether its worth it.
