PS4 Pro Vs Nintendo Switch

So Im planning to use my AMEX card to buy either the Switch or PS4 Pro using one of the deals on now - they're both about $369 so cost is not really a concern.

I haven't really played many games in the past - I used to as a kid but the 3d era of games really ruined games for me. With first person shooters and even some third person ones like Grand Theft Auto - I get nauseous. So basically, the only game I've played for the past 15-20 years are like games where the camera doesn't move too quickly (like Fifa, street fighter or starcraft).

I like the Switch but it seems it's a bit underpowered, and doesn't seem to have a lot of third party support (I heard Fifa on it is nothing compared to the PS4 version). I really like the fact that I can undock it and play it anywhere.

PS4 Pro on the other hand seems better value, cause of the better hardware. But seems most of the top games I probably can't play cause they're in 3D. I also like the idea that I can expand it with the PS VR (I've tried the HTC Vive and strangely, I don't get sick from VR but I do from 3d).

Anyway, can't decide… what should I buy?

Look at the games on each of the platforms - they have VERY different games. Go into a store and play around with the controllers too - the Switch has more motion-linked controls I think, not sure if that ties in with your 3D gaming issue.

    • Agree with your first statement, but both consoles use controllers with a gyroscope.

      • Gyroscope yes, but I think the new Mario game on the Switch has you actually raising the controller (not just tilting it) to make Mario jump. But you're definitely right that both have some kind of motion controls involved.

        • You're definitely mistaken.

Jumping is the same as every Mario game before it, you press b.

The motion controls are shaking the remote horizontally or vertically for two moves cappy can do, neither of which have any chance of causing motion sickness, and you're rarely use them anyway (I've finished the game). If you still think it'll be a problem, there's an option in the settings called "Use Motion Controls" that you can turn off.

        • @BradleyDS2: Oh I'm not saying the motion controls will even be a problem for OP, just something to keep in mind.

          https://www.polygon.com/2017/10/27/16560180/super-mario-odys…

          But you're right, purely optional.

If you like Nintendo games buy the Switch, if you like teenage boy games buy a PS4 (or just use your PC if none of the exclusives attract you). Quite simple, really.

Everybody either does or doesn't like Nintendo games. Why not get a Wii and try a few Mario, Zelda, Donkey Kong games and see what you think. Unless you accidentally pay way more than it is worth it will be easy enough to sell later and get your money back (Nintendo games hold their value well). A Wii will cost you $20-$30 and each game around $10-$30 (the good ones at least, the crappy ones could be as low as $1).

Oh and the Switch does/will have a lot of indie titles, which could be the 2D stuff you're looking for. I have no experience with the PS4.

personally I have both.. switch is only used at night time when I'm in bed…. ps4 sits in the lounge room mainly collecting dust… have been playing new call of duty though, which I'm not really enjoying (but that's another story).

I must say, I'm really liking the indie game support switch has. I've downloaded quite a few games now, all under $30 and found myself playing them more than some of the more known titles..

    • Not trying to hijack, but can you let me know which specific indie games you're loving? Just got the switch and defo want to support the indie Devs to hopefully ensure the platform stays top quality!

thimbleweed park would be my top vote at the moment… I put over 10 hours into it… it's a throw back to the old 90's point and click games.. (games like leisure suit larry, monkey island…)

Based on what you said about 3D style games, I'd say the Switch will be your better bet. Already there are a ton of great 2D games there, most of the ones already on the PS4, and there will be more moving forwards. And as you say, the handheld style is pretty great.

  • +3

I think Switch is a better bet if you have a solid computer.

99% of the PS exclusives will be in those 3D things u mentioned, as well as 90% of the other games on PS4

Switch is more of a platformer device for games so there will be more of those 2D things you are familiar with.

PS4 do have more selection, but most of the better ones are on PC as well. So if you got a workable PC, switch will be the better choice.

you can't compare them on specs, switch is like a laptop, it will always have lower specs for a similar price because its designed to be portable.

  • +4

get a switch. the ps4 will be cheaper later. the switch will maintain its price for a while.

Based on your brief description, I would say get the Switch. It´s definitely not underpowered at all.

  • As others have said, pick a console based on the games, it is wrong to perceive the PS4 as being better value due to better specs on paper.

    PS4:

    • More mainstream games, some of which are on PC
    • Good for streaming services
    • Blu-ray player

    Nintendo Switch:

    • Great games you can't get on any other console, like Zelda Breath of the Wild (Game of the Year contender) and Super Mario Odyssey (which is amazing)
    • Third party support will never be amazing, though a lot of people will appreciate popular games being remastered for a portable form factor (Skyrim)
    • You have the option of using the console as a portable, more motion controls if you are into that

I personally own a PS4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch. Only playing Super Mario Odyssey and Kingdom Hearts (PS4) at the moment.

  • I currently own a PS4 Pro and a pretty stacked PC & even I want the Nintendo Switch. Not to mention that the next Pokémon RPG will drop on that console (apart from Ultra Sun & Moon).

Then again there will be a Special Edition Pokémon console..

  • Dont waste your money. if you're not going to play games, because its nauseating, dont waste your money or time.

put the money towards something you can better use your time in, the things you enjoy. plan to spend it enjoying real stadium games and going places outdoors.

enjoy yourself, and get a friend with a console you can play occasionally. eventually life will edge out consoles and gaming and you:ll have a different way to enjoy your life. all the best with your choice

I do not have a ps4 but I do have a Switch, Xbox and PC. Switch is getting plenty of use and being able to play it ANYWHERE is a massive win in my books.

Go for what games you want. Both systems have some great exclusives. I have a ps4 and just recently got a psvr and love it. I would get a switch too if I had time and money.

    • so with the VR set, are there games that are legitimately good and you would spend hours playing it? Or is it still more just a novelty?

      • Only had it for two days. Love it. 9/10 only gripe is graphics could be better. I feel totally immersed. Just started playing farpoint, it is amazing! Will be getting Skyrim on launch in a couple of weeks. For me it is great, I'm a casual gamer who has always wanted a VR set and it ticks all the boxes except for graphics. I think it is probably a novelty but if it takes off, the next generation will be amazing.

Final word: Get it if you have the cash and always wanted a VR system. Otherwise maybe hold off for next gen or find a friend with one to try it

        • yeah i tried my friend's HTC Vive - it was frigging awesome! But yeah, despite that, it did feel like it would probably be a novelty and it wouldn't be a thing I'd play regularly.

I mean for a start, it took a lot of set up and there's like a clumsy cord hanging off you so not really the type of thing you can really just pick up and play.

So I agree, this generation the VR is kind of like a taste of things to come - in 4-5 years, VR is when its really going to go off!

@witsa: sounds like you have made up your mind. Get the switch :)

    • Between the Psvr and the Switch, which do you feel you would get the most value out of? Hubby wants to get a psvr with some JB Hifi credit we have, but I thought of getting the Switch instead. Mexican standoff!

  • They are different systems. I have both(Ps4 and switch) because comparing them isn't apples for apples.

The switch is a fairly relaxed chilled gaming system.

PS4 pro is quite a lot more powerful, better suited to high graphics intense games and of course it has the option of the VR headset.

  • It really depends on what you want to get out of it… a PS4 Pro is significantly more powerful than the Switch, but at the same time it's not a portable system… So comparing the two is not really going to go anywhere… If you're looking for a portable system, you really only have one choice. If we assume you primarily intend to play on the TV, I would probably recommend getting the PS4 Pro instead simply because of the quantity of games available.

You mention getting motion sickness with 3D games, so by having a large library of games to choose from you will definitely find more games that work for you… The PS4 Pro has many 2D titles available, and several hybrid 2D-ish 3D titles, like Ultra Street Fighter IV or Street Fighter V and Diablo III. These probably won't be too bad on you. Having said that, with your motion issues, I would definitely steer clear of the PSVR virtual reality headset. It's awesome, but even some hardcore gamers can't handle it.

The Switch simply has too few games for someone that already has issues playing the majority of modern 3D games. All the 'killer app' games I can think of on the Switch you pretty won't be able to play. Normally I'd say a Switch is worth it for Zelda BOTW alone (not to mention Xenoblade Chronicles 2) but if you can't play these games I simply can't see a reason to buy a Switch. Even second-tier games would be off-limits given your condition.

Just throwing it out there, but if you mainly like older 2D games, why not pick up a SNES classic mini (https://ebgames.com.au/loot-217392-Nintendo-Classic-Mini-Sup…) while they're available? It's only $120 and includes 21 games, most of which should be fine for you to play. Also, it's hackable, so you can add additional games if you're not happy with the 21 and dig around a bit for the information and files.

Determine which exclusives you want from each system. Also if you're going to play any multiplayer games, what systems will your friends use?

  • +1

They are very different systems, but in your situation I would go with the Switch. The ability to play it on the go, and how quick it is to get into a game makes it better then the PS4 Pro to pick up and play for 10 - 20mins and put down.

  • There are many games on the PlayStation store that are 2d, there's not so many on the Switch however.

I think you'd have a much easier time avoiding games that fast paced on the Sony because of the sheer number of titles available compared to the Switch. Especially if you stick to more story oriented games like Broken Sword 5 and The Walking Dead or other Telltale games.

  • Switch is better imho for controlling motion sickness than other usually tv or monitor connected console games where the screen is static so you have less control and less ability to prevent or control motion sickness.

Handheld is just so much more easier and more fun that is why I am now still a hardcore Android fan boy and still will be until the other platforms can deliver something better portability wise.

Having said that I love my PS4 and paying Planetside 2 on it is kick ass.

Cheap investment for free entertainment functionalities.
