VPN - Which do you Recommend?

Hi Everybody,

I've given up on the 'free VPN Firefox extension' as it's no longer stable.

I also think our home privacy is worth spending some $$$ on for a reputable company.

Requirements.

  • not part of 5 eyes / 14 eyes, etc
  • allows torrenting if possible
  • can be setup at the router (as opposed to installing on each computer and phone, etc).

What do you recommend?

I use PIA and am happy. I much prefer having foreign companies rather than our supposed saviours here know what I'm looking at.

    • Seconding PIA.

Works well, very little hassle to set up, good speeds (I swear my speeds sometimes go UP with PIA on), and I know it works because I can access sites and get content "localized" for other geographical locations. (e.g. Netflix or Youtube).

Obviously can't confirm that they keep no logs, but have yet to hear anything bad so fingers crossed.

    • it should be PIA </thread>

      Still not sure, https://www.ozbargain.com.au/search/node/recommended%20vpn?t…

  • I use TorGuard. I think if you Google a promo code, you can get 50% off for the life of your plan.
I'm paying monthly $6USD, and it's pretty good so far. Can barely tell it's running, youtube loads fine etc.

I think the price goes down if you do bigger payment plans (ie: 6 monthly, yearly, etc)

Google some reviews, it's quite reputable from what I've read.

Unless you are an Edward Snowden type who needs ultimate security I'd go for the best deal you can get. I got a PureVPN "lifetime" deal at Stacksocial for about $70. I'm only counting on lifetime being 5 years. That date is already in the account. I need to keep an eye on DNS leaks and I certainly would not bet on their kill switch with my life, but in general, it is very easy to set up and the speed is so so.

    • Nothing too crazy going on, just if I'll be paying for a product, I'd expect it to work properly.

Like insurance, if I'm paying for insurance, then it has to be reputable, and work when needed.

I got some bad news for you about PureVPN

      https://www.goldenfrog.com/blog/purevpn-no-log-claims-false

      • I am aware of that case. Not a problem.

"The story involves a cyberstalker in the US named Ryan Lin who is accused of harassing, cyberbullying and hacking into his victim’s account."

I will not be doing any of that, I promise, and I expect a VPN to collaborate with the authorities for anybody that does.

That's the most naive take on this I can possibly fathom. The whole point is that a VPN keeps you untrackable, not that "Oh, only if someone really wants to track me, then they can."

Also, key word in your quote? "Accused". Good luck if you're ever wrongly accused of something.

      • If you think any VPN company doesn't store logs, you've got a big surprise.

They really shouldn't be advertising that they don't keep logs if they do. What else might they be lying about?

        • Actually very little reason for them to deliberately lie and keep logs. Accidentally because they misconfigured something on their servers? Possibly. But there's no benefit to it. They can't sell these logs for cash, they can't monetize them for serving ads to users (because none of these are ad-supported), it's cheaper to tell the govt "Nope, no logs" if subpoenaed than to actually dig up and provide logs, and their entire business will die if it turns out they keep logs.

          There's just no upside.

        • Here is PureVPN's detailed response. They claim they don't keep personal logs, only network logs.

          https://www.purevpn.com/blog/vpn-logs-explained/

Here is another detailed analysis of the Lin case. I'll post a bit of it.

Because the affidavit in the case refers to tying Lin’s usage to several VPNs, it has been read to confirm that PureVPN, especially, has been keeping historic logs of users, contrary to their public claims. To be clear: you can never know whether a VPN is honest about keeping logs or not, and simply having a VPN on your computer might provide means of compromise (sort of like an anti-virus), that makes you more vulnerable. But I don’t think the affidavit, by itself (particularly with a great deal of the evidence in the case still hidden), confirms PureVPN is keeping logs. Rather, I think the account matching described in the affidavit says the FBI could have identified which VPNs Lin used via orders to Google, Facebook, and other tech companies, and using that, obtained a pen register on PureVPN collecting prospective traffic. I don’t think what is shown proves that FBI obtained historic logs (though it doesn’t disprove it either).

One thing to understand about this case is that Lin would have been the suspect right from the start, because his stalking started while he still lived with Smith, and intensified right after his roommates got him evicted. Plus, some of his stalking of Smith and others involved his real social media accounts. That means that, at a very early stage in this investigation, FBI would have been able to get all this information from Google and Facebook, which his victims knew he used.

Also sometimes you need more than just privacy but also performance. One of the reps was complaining to me yesterday (whom shall remain nameless) saying she spent half an hour trying to post a deal but OzBargain always timed out. Turned out she forgot that her "free VPN browser extension" was turned on and the connection routes through some super slow end points.

  • Would highly recommend OVH — I've been with them for years and currently have two high spec servers with 2x Xeon E5-2650v3.

OVH now has a data-center in Sydney which is very convenient for us Australian's.

Purchase the Standard VPS plan which is $5.49 AUD a month.

    Included:

    SLA
    99.95%
    Scalability
Add resources via the Control Panel
    Bandwidth
    100 Mbps - Unlimited traffic
    free Anti-DDoS
    Protection included

    IP
1 IPv4 included (all ports open)
1 IPv6 included (all ports open)
    management
    Control Panel
    RESTful API
    KVM
    Root access
    Operating systems
    Operating systems
    Desktop Operating systems
    Pre-installed CMS
    E-commerce
    Control panels
    Development
    Reboot and reinstallation
    Unlimited, via the Control Panel
    Monitoring
The Control Panel gives you a detailed overview of your VPS

Make sure you select Debian as the OS and pretty much setup a PPTP VPN on that VPS.

It's really easy, and it's convenient because you can alter the settings to your liking and add as many clients as you desire.

If you're not familiar with PuTTy or Debian, shoot me a PM and I'll gladly setup everything for you.

    • Off-topic — are you using vRack between your E5 dedicated and VPS? Any good?

    • Looks pretty decent. Have you experimented with their different options?
I wonder how a 1 core/2GB RAM performs compared to 2 core/4GB RAM…. looks like decent spec bump, exactly doubling of hardware for doubling of cost to ~AU$8.75

  • AIRvpn

  • been using PIA for a couple of years now without any issues.

something i did find out about google chrome web rtc is enabled by default, not to sure on how this works but if this is on even though you're using a vpn your REAL IP can still be detected. So yeah you can still be tracked that you were on a torrent site etc.

    http://www.slimjet.com/en/how-to-disable-webrtc-in-chrome.ph…

never in my life would i expect to type these words…….i've been using IE for browsing whilst using my vpn

  • Thanks everyone.

Still don't have a clear winner, but will look further into it.

  • I would agree with PIA but from what I see/read online they are based in the US (one part of their business?) so in the 'eyes' - other wise NordVPN has been good for me and is out of the 'eyes'. As with everything though give them a test, companies usually offer money back or trials so nothing to lose.

    • Thanks Lukey, appreciated.
