RMS Inspection Needed for Registration That Was Cancelled [NSW]

Hubby purchased a car through Gumtree. Registered in my name as I was able to pick it up and he was not. Have had the car almost 6 months.

Last month was contacted by RMS to do an inspection of the car. This coincided with my mum whom I am a carer for going into hospital and then respite and as I live with her part time but 2.5 hours away I also care for two teenagers and a husband with cancer.. so was a bit busy 😊 Anyways I did not get round to meeting up with them so they cancelled my rego.

After a total breakdown I contacted Service NSW and was told I needed to re register my car but it needed a blue slip inspection. I did this all the while asking why was this needed.. no one had an answer but I was lead to believe that once it was blue slipped and re-registered and green slipped and plated I was OK… cranky but OK… so $1000 later I clocked it up to experience.. a BAD experience and now I could go back to living a busy carers life.

BUT on Friday I got another letter to say you need an inspection on your car… I was like WHAT so I rang and said I did what was required as you cancelled my rego and I had the car inspected it should be all good. But no they still want to inspect the car… and will not tell me why.

I am worried… anyone able to give me any idea why.

  • Down here in VIC a vehicle still needs to be visually inspected by an authorized officer even after a roadworthy (blue slip) has been obtained - it sounds like the process is similar where you're at.

Is the car a turbo or V8? What mods does it have done to it?

  • Blue slips arise (primarily) when a car has fallen out of registration ServiceNSW … I assume this is what has happened here based on your description of all that is going on with you.

I can only assume that your vehicle continues to be unregistered. You will need to work out why this is the case in your specific circumstance.

Whatever you do … DO NOT DRIVE THAT VEHICLE.

If you are sprung by the police driving an unregistered vehicle you will be hit with a big fine and may be headed down the road of licence suspension/disqualification pending the rest of your circumstances.

Worse still, an unregistered vehicle is completely uninsured (in absolutely every sense). That means you will be up for a world of financial hurt if you're involved in an accident firstly for any damage you may to do others' property (cars, buildings, government owned infrastructure, etc.), not to mention perhaps a lifetime of paying medical bills if you injure someone else.

    • They removed the remaining rego (7 weeks) so I re-registered it for 12 months so it currently has 11+ mths

      • Be careful and make sure you know exactly where you stand on this matter. If that car is unregistered, you are in for a world of hurt if anything goes wrong.

        • Got the car re-registered for 12 mths 2 weeks ago

        • @hsk: but if it requires some form of inspection, there may be restrictions on the rego. The inspection, if defect related, might mean you can only drive to the inspection station to have the defect cleared or to a mechanic to have the issue fixed.

Yeh just the not knowing is a bit stressful 😊

    *Why

  • Anyways, what kind of inspection did they say your car needed? The blue slip, green slip, and rego is all fairly standard if you refused to get a pink-slip and let the rego lapse. As others have said, don't drive the car if it's unregistered.

    • Sorry reposted below

    • It was registered till 10 December 2017 on the 6 October they cancelled my rego as I had not met the requirements of having an inspection. They firstly asked me to drive to Botany which as I drive between Southern Highlands and Central coast weekly.. and sometimes twice a week I could not fit with this so they took the last approx 8 weeks rego and I had to re-register the car including a blue slip.

      • That's so weird. A pink slip (and green slip) usually line up perfectly with rego. If your rego hasn't expired, you shouldn't have needed to get another pink slip.

Anyways - check the date of that second letter you got - was it posted before you got the blue slip and renewed the rego? Could've just been an automated letter they sent up before they system updated to show that you DID already get the car inspected.

BUT! Err on the side of caution - go into an RMS physically early as you can and talk to a real person and see what's going on.

        • Yep checked the date and rang them they still want an inspection.. 😯

        • @hsk: Why? They must tell you what they are inspecting, otherwise how can you be expected to ensure the car is roadworthy before the inspection.

On second thoughts, I wonder if they are requesting an inspection to check on the person who did the blue slip.

        • @Euphemistic:
I asked 3 + times he would not say.. just that it needed an inspection and basically I needed to get it done ASAP and stop putting it off.. and no matter what I have going on personally the inspection MUST happen…

        • @hsk: Ask gain, someone else. Tell them you need to know why so you can ensure the vehicle is properly roadworthy prior tot he inspection because you can't afford the time to have a second inspection done if it fails.

Yes, it has to happen otherwise they may cancel the rego again.

        • @Euphemistic:
The attitude of the charming inspector leaves a lot to desire…. he had the car this morning for about an hour.. he said its ready to go after that time I walked back to the car and he commented that he would be in touch regarding the suspension. I said what suspension.. he said as I missed confirming the first appointment in October they removed the rego. Then I re-registered it and I figured now I was OK… but he tells me this is not the case as they wanted to inspect the car on 3/11 and I did not confirm. So now there is a suspension pending…
