    Computer science

    • Have you seen the employment rates for computer science graduates?

      • I've seen the employment rates for Pharmacy grads - abysmal because there was an oversupply of grads a few years back.

comp science - you will need to upgrade your knowledge with mostly every change in the tech field, pharmacy - not as much

comp science - chances of outsouring/jobless will be higher as compared to pharmacy

both require woirking hours out of normal 9-5 business hours

comp science - chances to grow, even globally (for eg with MNC), pharmacy - mostly limited to your own country

    • Who in computer science at 9? More like 12

DO NOT do Pharmacy. Let me repeat that, DO NOT do Pharmacy.

    Computer Science.

Pharmacy is ok as long as you don't become a retail pharmacist. Such a boring job

Very different fields - which are you more excited by?
I studied both but didn't finish Pharmacy. It's a tougher course but maybe because i'm more naturally into technology than chemistry/physiol.
Of the two in terms of earnings - pharmacy has many fields. You can move into research, pharmaceutics, hospitals or retail.
Computer Science is even more open and the degree itself will not open doors for you without specific skills that employers are looking for. It took me some time to find my feet in technology but the rewards are now much greater than my potential earnings as a pharmacist - I probably would have ended up on the retail side.

    TL;DR
    Pharmacy
Pros: clearer career path, higher earnings initially, opportunity for own business, very high female/male ratio
Cons: Regulatory changes could disrupt (US already has pharmacies in Walmart), Course is harder and more contact hours, retail pharmacy profits come from mostly things other than the actual drugs to my knowledge

    Computer science:
Pros: Innovation! Always moving and if you keep an eye out for evolving trends you will always be ahead. Good earnings opportunities.
Cons: Initial low pay, Disruption threats to non specialised/commoditised IT due to outsourcing, automation, mostly males although this is changing, you will need to find your own path unless you are lucky and fall into something.

I can contribute my own experience as I went from Pharmacist to Web developer/Software engineer around 2 years ago.

Pharmacist award wage = 27/hour. Lucky to get $35-40/hour casual (no annual leave/sick leave benefits) once you get some experience (but remember there'll always be another pharmacist who is willing to work for less). Hospital pharmacist get paid more ($35-40/hour) full time with benefits.
I moved to web development two years ago, and I can comfortably say I earn more than most pharmacist employees (above the 80k salary mark).

Opportunity for business in pharmacy is hard; if you want to buy an existing pharmacy good luck. You'll need a fat deposit up front (20% of say 2-$X mil depending on where you want to buy). Plus fight against retail power giants e.g. cwh/priceline etc if you don't join them.
Not to mention the government is always looking for ways to reduce what pharmacy get in terms of income.

I'm very curious to hear from anyone who went from another career path in Pharmacy and if it was worth it.

  • Don't bother with pharmacy, there's no money in it anymore.

  • Let me say one thing - Don't think just about the money.

Pharmacy and Computer Science are two very different worlds. Why are you considering the two?

It's possible that one will pay more than the other, but if you don't enjoy it - what's the point?

  • +1

There is money in both fields if you are good.

If you just want to be a run of the mill employee, go comp sci. The career progression for pharmacy (both hospital and retail) is almost none existent.

Pharmacy does have the advantage of giving you a professional qualification that limits your number of competitors for the same job. However with the flood of graduates I am not sure how much this will matter in 5 years.

  • www.joboutlook.gov.au - check out this website for data regarding these two career fields

  • Pharmacy wise- if you are in for the money, out you go.

  • Merged from Computer Programmers or Chemists

A quick google says that they get paid the exact same on average. my question is Does that make sense and what do the chemists and people who work in IT think about this?

    • +1

      Should it not make sense?

They're two separate professions that require a fair deal of specialisation, which are highly demanded.

    • I think Programmers should definitely be paid way more.

Or chemist. Whichever one that will trigger you.

    • If you mean a chemist store chemist, that industry was decimated by Chemist warehouse. Wages are low and don't match the rigorous training. If you're talking about someone with a pill press, the sky is the limit.

    • There is no inherent 'fairness' in the labour market. it is all about 'Supply and demand'. If you are the only programmer in town capable of fixing a $500m mega project that some huge corporation depends upon you get paid a ton. if you are one of thousands of generic programmers capable of building a generic website you get paid peanuts….maybe! Same with a chemist I guess, if you are the only guy alive that can engineer the cure for a particular strain of cancer you probably get paid a ton, if you are looking to pull a few generic shifts at the local chemist warehouse you probably get not much!
