US / Central America Travel Adaptor - 2 Pin

Leaving for US/Central America on Sunday. Does anyone know of Australian online retailer or bricks and mortar store where I can buy a travel adaptor - 3 pin australian to 2 pin US (flat vertical pins). Majority of power points in El Salvador don't have the earth pin slot and am having trouble finding single adaptors as opposed to the big multi country ones.

Have tried Kmart, Bunnings, JB Hi-Fi, Officeworks, Kathmandu, Anaconda

  • Is this what you want? Officeworks

    • No, but thanks. I need the 2 flat pins without the round earth pin.

Actually, that listing actually has 2 different adaptors in the photos - a US/Canada photo and a European!

      • Get that and cut the pin off.

  • 3 pin australian to 2 pin ? I don't think any authority would approved to have a such a device. Pretty much ditching the ground? Why anyone want to do that? Third pin for reason, to ground the appliance.

    • That’s 2 prong to 2 prong

      • yeah i realised and was typing in an edit lol

You're not going to find any of those in a single adapter as it needs to be earthed. If you get a big multi adapter you can bypass the earth plug

  • They don’t exist legally…

The multi country ones would be your best bet.

What devices have 3 pins ? All my electronics are 2 prong

    • Laptop charger

      • What kind of laptop ? If it’s a generic iec removable plug on the end of the charger, you might be better off buying a cable in the US.

I had the same issue in Japan. It’s a huge pain. Luckily most hotels do have 3 pin plugs.

        • It's a Toshiba t460p

  • What will you be plugging in at El Salvador with three pins using 115v?

    • Laptop charger which takes 100-240v. Although I might try and find a power brick to wall cable while I'm in the U.S. to avoid having to use an adaptor.

      • Ah, I see, the cord doesn’t come out of the transformer does it?

  • This is how people die.

2 pin application involves gadgets like mobile phone chargers without exposed metal.

3 pin (2 pin and earth) are for exposed metal. In the event the is an internal fault and a live wire makes contact with the metal, that metal is earthed and will operate an RCD. If you remove the earth, the metal appliance will be live, waiting for someone's fingers to make contact.

According to this page, El Salvador have an earthed socket, as well.

    • There are some 3 pin points, but I've spent a lot of time there and the points in our house only have slots for 2 pins.

      • Maybe it’d be worth looking to install some 3 prong plugs if you / family has a house there and you visit often from Australia…

  • I was doing some reading through other forum posts and was sure I had seen comments about most modern appliances being built to not actually need to be earthed, but the plugs are more of a legacy to be able to fit the Power points, but I could have been mistaken - I'm definitely no expert so appreciate the comments.

Alot of my appliances have 2 pins but I was mainly concerned about my laptop charger, but might try and find a Powerbrick to wall cable while in the U.S. to avoid the adaptor altogether.

    • what sort of adapter is it? do you have a link?

if it has a removable cord you can just get a lead that connects the brick to the wall
