Mattress Retailers Are Gouging Australians, Choice Review Finds

Choice has able to have some mattresses reduced by 60% by haggling.

Wonder if we'll see some "deals" as a result of this?

  • Sealy Metro series Loft is gonna sell out everywhere now ;)

Probably like any sales too, depends on that salesperson that day.

We need choice to post the receipt so we can get the store to price match

  • I've found on furniture, homewares, electrical, etc., the thing to do is monitor the sale price and this is then the "real price" you should pay. If the item is regularly on a 50% sale (as mattresses are) then that is what you should aim to pay.

A few years ago I kitting out a new place. I discovered a Bing Lee store that was having a sale and another one that wasn't (not sure how that works, but anyway). Went to the one that was not on sale and without showing more than a passing interest in buying, the guy knocked off 20-odd%. Went to the one that was on sale (surprise, surprise, by about 20%) and the guy would barely move on price. Ended up getting about another $100 off the sale prices on about $3k worth of stuff.

I've used this approach a lot over the years and has always been a pretty good guide.

  • where can i get Sealy Metro series Loft for 450 ?

"Price Gouging" is… not really a thing.

If you're willing to pay the price, that's what shops are going to charge.

Imagine going into Apple and accusing them of "price gouging" because their products are made for cents on the dollar in SE Asia sweatshops.

  • Are they suggesting the saving on RRP? No mattress retailer ever sells at RRP which I believe is a figure plucked out of thin air.

I rang around Harvey Norman stores obtaining quotes on the exact same mattress and was given varying RRPs (not too mention different best prices).

The last 2 times I've bought Mattresses getting to 50% off RRP really wasn't hard .
I can't say I've ever come across another consumer item where the RRP meant so little at basically every store we went to .

  • we bought an ergo flex about 4 years ago, best mattress we've ever had (~$600 vs others we've bought 2-3k)
