Stereo speakers under $500

Hi,

I'm looking for stereo speakers to connect to my amp. I've inherited a nice JBl pair from my stepdad but over the years the sound has degraded due to the foam breaking down on the woofer. It's very buzzy when I play bassy songs;particularly on vinyl. Should I attempt to fix my existing speakers or are there worthy alternative under $500? I collect vinyl and listen to Spotify, but notice the buzzing much more when playing vinyl. Thanks for your help!

  • What brand and model number is your amp?

  • It's quite old, it's a Yamaha AX-500 from the 90's. I haven't had any issues with it though. Would you recommend upgrading that too?

    • I think the Yammy is OK and if it does what you want it to.
For $500, you might see some good speakers on Gumtree second hand (if you use that platform)
You can get bargains from Gumtree if you do your homework.
If you like book-shelf speakers, I would recommend the Polk RTiA3. This is a reference speaker and a little bright (treble is more noticeable) — if you like a tint of treble which i do. It has decent bass too, for a bookshelf speaker

If you live in Vic (Melb) there is one here for less than $400

      Unless you like floor-standers?

      Cheers

  • Wow, fantastic response thank you. I do use gumtree and live in Brisbane. I'm looking for something to place in my kitchen so bookshelf's are what I am after. Any other models worth considering?

    • I guess it is subjective however I would recommend "Reference" type speakers.
      As I have mentioned some.

      • Polk RTiA3 (more power required however your Yammy is suffice)
      • Polk RTiA1
      • Klipsch RB/RP-M (Klipsch has a broken link on their site for some reason) - More efficient than Polk (less power required to drive)

.. there are many other brands however I have these Brands and they have been fantastic for the price and widely available.

I am sure that many others would recommend other brands ..

I have purchased the Polk RTiA1 speakers off Cashies for $150 so you can go to their webshop and type in "Polk" in their search field and see what is available … and many others.

  • You can repair the drivers or even replace them. You'd need to work out if the cost is worth it vs getting new speakers.

  • Worth replacing for a JBL S26BE? Studio series? Can't find much on them
