Shipping iPhone for Repair through AUSPOST

I have a slight display calibration issue (yellow tint) on my iphone so through apple's repair service site, they gave me a postage sticker and instructions on what to do. On that instruction, it says :

Take the shipping label and your IPHONE X to Australia Post. The Australia Post agent will provide the appropriate packaging. Be sure to send us only the product itself. If you include extra items in the box, we won't be able to return them to you. The ship time to Apple may be as many as five business days, depending on your region. We'll send you an email when your product reaches the repair center.

But when I went to my local auspost, they told me that they know nothing about the packaging and I had to pay for it separately (granted it wasnt crazy expensive but still..)

Which side is correct here?

  • Maybe they mean you should ask Australia Post about how to package a fragile electronic device. Nothing in the quote says they'll gift you the packaging.

  • The Australia Post agent will provide the appropriate packaging

Meaning, they'll sell you materials for you to craft your own packaging. I don't think Auspost has some kind of program that involves giving people free return packaging for fault products.

    • Apple is billed for it, just as they are billed for the shipping.

      • oh yeah, shipping is paid for. Maybe the materials are also paid for as well..

Packaging is paid for too. Foxtel has a similar arrangement for their STBs. You just take it in unpacked and Auspost supply the box.

        • Cool, thats good to know.

  • Just to confirm, you do not live anywhere near an Apple store? That would obviously be easier than posting it in if possible.

I've done this before, it's just a small padded envelope. Apple has already paid for it so you shouldn't have to pay a cent
The padding should be enough protection for shipping

    • Can concur, my brother was provided packaging and didn't have to pay anything when he sent his iPhone to Apple last year.

Apple is correct, and staff at AusPost weren’t following the instructions that come up on their screen when they scan the barcode which tells them exactly what to do, right down to the specific packaging items they are expected to supply for the transaction.

Keep a copy of the receipt for what you paid, and call up Apple to discuss it.

Well, I don't think calling for a refund would be necessary cos it wasn't that expensive. TBH the local auspost service quality has gone down recently and this is pretty much the nail in the coffin. I guess this is a great chance to stop myself from going to that shitty place.

  • Just adding to the already known question. I've done this and Apple pays for the lot. Try another Auspost!

  • Never did an apple returns before but usually if you do a returns, there are specific instructions that will come up on the screen after the person over the counter scans the returns barcode as mentioned by thewinchester. Sometimes there might even be options of what packaging matierials can be provided.
