[OzBargain 11th Birthday] Hobart Meetup

Hi All,

Enough of fun being made of our little precious Tasmania, lets get together and celebrate ozbargain's 11th birthday here at Hobart. I am looking for 25 people here at Hobart who are happy to come for some celebrations.

I am happy to arrange the party (sometime between now and 14 Dec,17), possible thinking of ordering a few pizzas and buy own drinks but am open to ideas that can fit in $500 budget or a bit over.

Looking forward to get some numbers now.

Regards

Varun

  • Sad Tassie, no one's here.

  • Waiting for someone to post about 2 for 1 offers

Plenty people here, just have to make a way for them to see this post. Still hopeful :) else we can have a grand party amongst us. Not sure if Scotty is open for family or friends joining in ….. plenty of them have benefited from the deals that I got them.

Sounds like a plan! I can represent from kingston!

    • Good one shaz. Thanks and I need more so ask your friends to get on to ozbargain :)

  • Sounds good. When you have some more details firmed up I'll see if north of creek road can come (Moonah).

  • Thanks. Will keep you all informed if we go ahead.

  • How's the meetup going? I think perhaps if we had a couple of suggestions of venues and then work on dates we'll get some interest.

  • Good idea Neil. Do you have something in mind? I was thinking BBQ on beach sandy Bay or Kingston with few slabs of beer considering the event warm run of weather we have had. We need to get numbers else this may not work. Cheers

Taking the lead from the other OzBargain parties I think our best chance at numbers is to have something on a work night centrally in the CBD or Salamanca? Perhaps drinks and nibbles somewhere? I personally would be more likely to come if I could easily pop in after work somewhere, but if I had to drive down to Kingston I would not be so keen.

    • Sure, maybe name a couple of suggestions in the CBD of places and we'll go from there?

Sounds like a great idea, whether it's out and about (OzB) or at a venue (non-OzB). I'd be keen either way, however being a single parent that kinda limits the options when I have free time (think 1.5 days a month unless it's a school holiday period) so that kinda sucks. I do agree with mandstar87 that a central location would be preferable as the "few" people would be coming from all over the suburbs and if having beers etc then driving is out of the question.

I don't really have the luxury of potential babysitters but an early work night might be doable or on a weekend, however it'd have to be a kid-friendly location as I'd have kids with me.

Open to ideas though, weekends are more flexible but still come with varying kid baggage :)

  • I’ll come along to support the event . Don’t know anyone in Tas really as am kinda new. Away atm will be back about 8 December.
How do I get notified of new posts- only just saw this now .

    • Heh yeah kinda the same. There is a subscribe link/button thing right next to the Comments headline so that should do it.

  • Just go pick a pub/bar down at Salamanca or somewhere down the CBD. Plenty of good places along the waterfront.

Much better than a Glenorchy Maccas meetup.

    • No more norchy maccas tho :(

Been gone about a year now.

      • And yet New Norfolk has one. Weird :/

        • The franchise owner of Rosny Park owned both norchy and NN. He failed some major checks at NN and ended up losing the store to management who still own it AFAIK.

The lease ended on Norchy and it was barely breaking even, if that, so he let it go.

So now he just owns Rosny which is his main earner.

  • Ok Team,

Need a consensus here. How about we suggest a date? 13 Dec,17 5 PM ??????
Hotel Soho on davey St. Has beer on specials and I have found the place better than Tele on Morrison. Would like to know your thoughts.

If Yes, then confirm the numbers as I need to talk to mods to confirm the budget and all.

    • Too bad they're not Friday specials, because I could be that way on a Friday or Saturday.

  • Happy to attend while I am there - especially if there are pizzas! ;-)

By the way, it would be great if selection would not be solely based on the price of alcohol as there are a good number of people who do not drink alcohol.

  • Would be very happy to come, but I am afraid I wont be able to attend due to work in Launceston. Good luck, Guys!

  • any TRUE OzBargainer would calculate how much they're likely to spend on this event, and then wait for the next eBay 20% or the Amazon launch

  • Ok Everyone. So how many people do I have for the 13th 5 PM, Hotel Soho (Davey St). Need final numbers so that I can inform Neil and Co for funding.

Plan is we can order meals and people can buy their own drinks (or if we have budget left).

    Cheers

    • Cannot make it at 5pm but if closer to 6pm then I am happy to attend while I am in Hobart.

    • Wow i missed all this- thought this was not going ahead so had not checked this in a while.

I work around the corner so im keen.

How are we going to identify each other?

  • I'm a probably but not definite yet. Next wednesday isn't it?

The fact that I know nothing about anyone is kinda weird, can't imagine what we'd talk about. I'm not even a serious tightarse. and probably the oldest person in this subgroup.
But I look at ozbargain often, too often.

And newish to Hobart so , you never know!
Am I the only woman in Hobart ozb?

I also think it's not obvious to locals who might be on ozbargain that this is on? I think I stumbled on it by accident somehow. Hard to round people up.

  • I'm about to make the move to Hobart from Sydney in January. Good to know there's some fellow bargainers over there. Sad that I'll miss the meet up though.

    • Congrats on the move. Where are you planning to live?

We are in the slightly older age group, and have found it hard to find like-minded friends - I don't work and we are away often. But hopefully that will develop.

Hobart is lovely and Tasmania is truly beautiful. People are very friendly.

      • Thanks. Age is never a barrier. I'll be moving just over the Eastern side of the bridge. Looking for a place to rent is hard though so dates will depend on that.

  • Apologies- I can’t come due to partner making other plans.
    Hope it’s fun!

  • Thanks all. Too late now. The numbers didn't make it. Glad we know the small oz bargain community in Hobart now at least.

    Regards

    • What? Any number would have done. The smaller the number the longer the budget would have lasted.
Very disappointed now. Was on my way there but glad I checked again.

      • Hi Lysander,

The budget was atmost 25 pp with an expectation of few people saying yes. I would have approached Neil even if we had 10. Sorry had to drop the ball as I hadn't received the response I was looking for. I never confirmed the plan as I was still gauging public response on the forum here. Thanks for all those who jumped in the discussion at least. Good to know that there are a few of us in beautiful Tassie as well.

        Regards

        Varun

        • That's fine. Thank you for your efforts.
Just out of curiosity: so, how many people did in fact say yes?

  • Well, as this didn't go ahead shall the few of us meet up regardless? I don't know any of you but happy to meet up and have a chat. Cheers
