Switch or 3DS - Which to take while travelling?

Hi all,

I’m travelling around Europe for 5 weeks over January/February and I’m deciding which gaming console to take with me - either my Switch or 3DS. On the Switch I’ll be able to play huge, awesome games such as Zelda, MK8, Mario Odyssey, Skyrim etc all on the go. My only hesitancy with taking the Switch is that it takes up more room than my 3DS, especially with the bulkier hard case I have for the system. I’ll also be on the move every few days so part of me thinks the Switch may become a little cumbersome. On the other hand, I have my 3DS which will take up a lot less room. I will still have plenty of good games to play on my 3DS, however they’re not going to be as good as Zelda, Mario Odyssey etc.

So, my question was whether anyone has travelled for similar periods of time with their Switch? If so, how did you find it? What would your opinions be on choosing between the Switch or 3DS?

FYI – I have a large portable power bank, so battery life shouldn’t be an issue (I’m hoping).

Thanks!

I'd go with the 3DS, that's what I've always traveled with and the small size and decent battery are great. But I also prefer 3DS games so YMMV.

I own both, also planning a Euro trip, went through the same scenario - 3DS will be my pick.
As you said, less cumbersome. Things like Joy Cons being extra components that I could potentially lose or misplace, cramming everything in to tight fitting luggage and carry ons (by the time I've shopped and bought extra stuff.)
3DS being a clamshell design may be a little more resistant physical abuse from the trip and worst case scenario, can be thrown in an average pocket as opposed to always needing to be held in hand. If you're travelling between sights/locations on buses and trains, a 3DS would get you a few more hours of play time without charging which would reduce the chance of needing to also carry your power bank (more cumbersome still).

Completely agree with your rationale. For those reasons i was leaning more towards the 3DS and think i'll go with that. Thanks!

Link's Awakening on a transparent Gameboy Light has most street cred.

Agree with above, also with the 3DS it would be less traumatic if you lose it or it gets knicked. Having said that, multiplayer mario kart on the switch in hostels etc. might be a good way to get talking to people!
