Anyone had success changing to a new phone prior to the contracted 12 months?

Sometimes they let you switch/upgrade 2-3 months early on a 24 month plan, not sure about 12 month plan, but no harm in asking.
I received an SMS from Optus a good 4 months (maybe longer I am not entirely sure) before my contract was up offering me a new phone/plan, mine was a 24 month contract. I wouldn't mind betting they would agree, but only an upgrade, they won't allow you to downgrade your plan with a new phone.
I'm 10 months into a 24 month connect and looking to upgrade.
I can upgrade for $99 in Feb and not having much luck with the online chat team being them to allow me to do that early.
