cheapest wireless router

Ive just moved in with a few mates, and they dont have a wireless connection running so for my laptop to have internet it would have to be wired. Any cheap wireless routers around?

Its not cheap, actually its bloody expensive hahah, but I got a good deal on a Netgear RangeMax Dual Band Wireless-N Modem Router today.
    Clive Anthony's: Usually $289, down to $259.
I asked the geezer for a cheaper price, and he took it down to $180.
    Bargain.

For that money you can grab a Billion 7800N with change.

  • MSY has some cheap routers, from $30.

While your at it why dont you get a wireless router that supports usb file / print sharing so you can share a hdd and a printer wirelessly, there's a few asus models around the 50 mark

    • done some research on my post for iinet wireless router - need gigabit internet ports, 300 N router and voip facilities as well. look at billion specs on cable guy and it says 2 VOIp connects are not available.
FXO Ports for VoIP - 0
FXS Ports for VoIP - 0
      same for 7800NL
not snot sure what it means. is my naked DSL with iinet voip supported by this router? am confused by these specs. [ignorant].

actually I want the cheapest router which need not be wireless. if wireless must be gigabit internet 4 ports; 300N. my newbie research suggests this will be the bst base to start from. the USB print sharing is good too.

best value for money is best price performance with long term best obsolescence proofing for the price.

i found the prices too similar between low end poor performers [belkin] and good ones under $200.
is there one I should buy?
pl clarify billion confusion as suggestions on my post indicate I should buy these.

    How about a ASUS RT-N10?
    It's a cheap, low budget 150mbps wireless N router.

Alternative, you can also get a WRT54G / WRT54GL second hand from eBay and get it flashed with DD-WRT or OpenWRT.

will this be my better bet [from my other post?] ie cover voip? gigabit internet ports?
      I know now this is a 300N!!!!!
read the links to change the software and hope I will do it fi the iinet guys don't.
[have to return their belkin wired 2+ g router soon or buy it.]

Stop jumping around Pecca! You ask for lots of advice but dont take any ?

To me it sounds like you are going in cirlces……

        • I am. a newbie. but my7 doubts need clearing please.
reading this post I found the price drop I was happy with.
just need to be assured that asus can handle voip as their specs say nothing.
I need the best hassle free adsl2+ 300n [gigabit] router with VOIP.
with due respect, unfortunately earlier answers did not clarify my doubts.
          i appreciate all your help.
just need clear answer to my remaining doubts.

so it seems I need 2 bits to get VOIP. this was what I was not sure of.

  • Apparently you can flash the Rt-N10 with openwrt too :)

  • If you want a good decent ADSL2+ Modem and with VOIP, my only suggestion is get a Billion 7800N and a Minitar MVA11A. Otherwise get a cheap asus all-in-one. It up to you to decide, but if I was you then I would go for the decent one like the 7800N combo with the MVA11A. Both has high review so it can't go wrong. :P

    • FYI

      To: [email protected]
advice from ozbagain suggested billion 7800N or NL did the job.
am with iinet naked dsl and do not like their wired belkin or wireless bob.
what is the right modem sweet spot for adsl2+ 300N gigabit ethernet ports [optional], with VOIP. gateway?
unfortunately wireless modem router descriptions in oz are not clear as some do not tick all my boxes.
rang you and staff asked me to write.
am in sydney if you have a shop here

  • am confused.
previous suggestions did not mention the MVA11A.
    Price Description
    $68.00-staticice info extract:
Minitar MVA11A VoIP ATA (Not Locked)
is it because billion comes without VOIP?
then my total price jumps to $260++
is there one modem router adsl2+, voip, gigabit internet, 300N which is better value for money, or performance?

my worry with iinet is if I do not use their gateway solution [belkin], I should get the best combo of 2+, 300N + VOIP + giga ethernet [if possible] to keep their installation and support simple.
otherwise if they cannot set up the system, I will be left without a connection.
I thought it best to have the least bits and to have bits which are easy for them to set up so I do not have problems now or in future.

    The Billion 7800N = $162 MSY
    The MVA11A = $68 staticice

Total = $230 for decent gear

    Now Billion 7800N -> Gigabit Ethernet, Wireless N (300N), ADSL2+ (doesn't have voip that why I suggest MVA11A)

    MVA11A -> Voip

So all the one you wanted is in the combo and well the setup is simple and not that hard to setup. Indeed all-in-one is less hassle but is not decent, so rather have decent > all-in-one.

    Up to you to decide.

@Peccadilloes, dude you've hijacked the OP's thread here mate & dragged it way off track! Not cool!

You've got your own thread where you're being helped, please stop jumping in and out of everyone else's or you'll start confusing those merely trying to help both you and others! If you didn't get something ask in there, your needs are somewhat different to those of this OP!

All the OP was after here was a cheap wireless router, not VOIP!!!

    • sorry. should have asked you the Questions on that thread
