How Does Groupon Compare with OzBargain

I know GroupOn is/was meant to be about group purchases but in effect it seems they offer discounts for a short time like OzBargain.

There emails are much flashier but I prefer the clarity of OzBargain.

Of course, I like the discussions on OzBargain better as well.

Your thoughts?

Thanks,
Ashley.

OzBargain is a community driven website.

Yes sorry, I am aware of that.

I was asking more in terms of deal quality and flow. I sound like a venture capitalist :-)

No, you sound like someone who doesn't know the difference between an online store and an internet forum.

      • No, you sound like a noob.

Not even sure how these two are comparable.

Groupon is a market place selling goods and experience packages from other vendors. You actually transact on the site — you pay them and then receive what you have purchased. Groupon then takes part of the payment as commission, and then give the rest to the actual vendors. Yup, it's actually more comparable to eBay and Amazon.

OzBargain is just a community of bargain hunters sharing the deals they found and occasionally wondering off into some off-topic discussions. A flashy version of old-school Internet forums.

(I actually got asked a lot at events and conventions on how OzBargain is different from eBay, Groupon, Amazon, etc — usually from people who have never used OzBargain before)

And countless emails from people who have purchased through OzBargain thinking this website is actually a store?

And lovely reviews left on Product Review as a result ;)

        • Hasn't been a good review in ages. We need more sockpuppets.

The Ozbargain page on Product Review is almost as entertaining as the forums on Ozbargain.

I'm not trying to compare the Web sites / business models.

I'm trying to compare the quality and diversity of deals.

I guess, as I mentioned, OzBargain can include GroupOn deals.

    • +3

Generally, Groupon will only include deals where they take up to 50% of the sale price. This makes it a very small subset of deals.

OZB doesn't take any part of the sale price so OZB can include anything, including Groupon deals.

groupon is a subset of ozbargain

    • can you draw a venn diagram explaining this?

  • +2

Groupon deals can be alright for experiences and restaurants, avoid the goods section because it could be fake or cheaper on eBay. If you think you found something good feel free to post on OzBargain and see what the community thinks.

  • +4

Groupon deals are vendor initiated. OzBargain deals are user contributed. And are sometimes accidental, to the chagrin of the vendor.

  • +1

Good Groupon deals will be popular on OzBargain… simples. Though some are pretty average and only posted to get the poster referral credit… but I digress.

Groupon - is like Amazon, they actually SELL stuff.

OzBargain - is like Facebook, we just… link stuff.

  • we dont sell stuff here…..

  • Move along, nothing to see here.
