Excelvan Universal Air Vent Magnetic Car Cellphone Holder USD $0.73 (AU $0.95) Delivered @ Gearbest

1280
80%OFF$1

Another new cheapie added to the Gearbest $1 deals, seems like a practical one for anyone who wants to secure their phone while driving. Comes with a magnet to place in your phone case and the other side to stick onto your car vent.

Reviews indicate that the magnets are strong enough to hold most phones and that the magnetism won't affect any of the phones function. From this discussion, it seems like the phone's compass might be the only thing affected, if at all possible.

However, please ensure that you don't leave credit cards in your phone case when using this product as apparently they may be affected/wiped by the magnet.

As always, enjoy!

I am bit worried about my postman, he visits my home every weekday with few small sachets :)

  • Thanks OP, bought one.

Could a strong magnet hard up against your phone for prolonged periods do harm to the electronics?

    • +2

I did a bit of researching before posting and couldn't find any information confirming a harm to the internals, apparently the magnets in these aren't strong enough to do damage, from what I could find.

      • Yes, thanks for that doweyy. I have now read your useful link.

Have no credit cards in your phone case seems to be one useful warning.

        • +1

Not a problem, have updated the deal with a disclosure on the credit cards thanks :)

      https://www.digitaltrends.com/mobile/how-magnets-really-affe…

“The problem we found is that a nearby magnet will affect the internal magnetic sensors inside the phone. The compass won’t read correctly,” explained Michael Paul, an engineer at K&J, “What’s worse, if you stick a strong magnet to the phone, you could slightly magnetize some steel components inside, making them act like weak magnets. This can make it difficult to properly calibrate the compass.”

Hands up if you use the compass app 😂

If you're trying to use the map and determine which way you're facing in a new/unfamiliar area it'd play havoc

        • -2

Still no hands up for the compass app 😂

        • @Popo: Handy for drifting to those hard-to-reach portals? ;)

The magnets are on the vent attachment, not stuck onto the phone. The only part stuck onto the phone (or phone case) is the metal plate.

In fact, if you have a phone with a metal back and don't use a case, you won't need to stick anything to the phone as the magnet will attach directly to the phone (e.g. Samsung Galaxy S8).

My old S3 has a plastic back, but had sufficient space to store the metal plate under the back (adjacent to the battery), hidden from the outside, so nothing had to be stuck to the phone.

      • Would be interesting to see the impact it has on Maps apps.

    • I've read that it can damage the phone's compass. Could be why the compass in my HTC 10 didn't work

  • +1

I have a similar one and i works well, but it would be good to have one that can be attached further down from the air vents somehow. You get a bit glare with the phone that high up.

    • +1

Depends on the position of your air vents and seating position. Each car is different.

Mines been perfect since last deal.

Got another for desk at work I can jig up something.

  • I recall a Justice League episode where they were up against a robot they could not take down. Batman beats it by using a magnet to affect the robot's battery. Yeah yeah, science! Thats a yeah for the evil genius and a yeah for Batman. Is your phone by an evil genius?

yes in fact it is…Steve Jobs

“Apple recommends avoiding the use of magnets and metal components in cases.”

        • And yet they sell smart cases 😂

        • @muncan: those comes with MFI iMagnets

  • Super deal! I just wish I could get one!

All my Gearbest orders have been repeatedly canceled and refunded :( Ive tried Paypal and debit/credit cards, with no luck. GB keeps saying that they face an issue with payment, even though the money transfer actually goes through. I end up getting the refund 3-5 days after the order is canceled.

Anyone else having the same issue with Gearbest?

  • lame, you can only buy one at a time. Thanks OP

got this model last time around for slightly more.

It just held my works iPhone 5c in an otterbox case (weight wise) but I don't know about over rough terrain.

Not confident enough to let it loose on my s7, so just use it clipped to a low shelf at work for a phone stand.

Metal plate does stop the wireless charging function though if the metal is located in the same place as the wireless circuit.

  • Will it work with glass backed iPhones?

Hopefully that is not a silly question :-)

    • +2

yes….they provide a stick on metal circle that does the job!

  • +2

Just an FYI for those with wireless chargers, the magnetic plate that you stick on the back of your phone causes some issues with charging, at least in my experience.

    • Yea I don't think it's possible to have a magnetic mounting plate that'll not interfere with wireless charging. I chose to go with magnetic mounting as it is really useful.

  • Thanks, ordered one.

Think I saw a similar product at Harvey Norman the other day for 80 AUD :D

  • fanks

  • Plus shipping cost of $1.6

    • +1

Shipping cost is free with “unregistered air mail”.

      • ohh my bad , I had my home country address selected.

for others looking to use a phone mount in cases where this does not fit on their air vent etc, I recommend getting one that is put in to your cars cd player slot. I have found this works fantastically and is very secure.

    • Thanks for the tip, the only negative thing I can think of for the magnetic vent attachment is that is will block (cool) a/c flow, which is an issue for me.
Any chance of a link to the kind/type you have? I almost never use my CD player so the type you have suggested fits the bill quite well.

  • bought one as well.

  • trying to sign in so i can buy it, but when i enter the right code to sign up, it says it's wrong….

i even magnified the code to make sure it was correct and it still says i entered it wrong…

    • I have the same problem, stay in login page after sign in. click back in browser or reload the product page then will see status as signed in.

  • Does this block PayPass on phone?

  • Will the metal plate on the phone block wireless charging

    • +1

Yes it will. If not, the metal plate heats up bad.
      It blocks nfc too.

  • I've used one of these for awhile and they're great! Generally I prefer to go case-less so I just leave a case w/ magnet attached in the car for when I need to GPS mount. I've also found that on some cars there isn't enough clearance to fully support the phone as well as having a cable running under it so what I do in these situations is have my phone rotated horizontally so the cable can go sideways. Have found this works very well

  • +1

NFC and wireless charging on my s7 edge is more important than a magnet.

  • I've been researching similar ones on the net and amazon etc. and still not convinced they don't cause internal damage to phones. Plenty of engineers saying to stay away from these magnetic holders.

  • Wow, received mine on Monday, forgot I had even ordered it. Super fast for free shipping 😁

  • Mine arrived today. These are good and very discreet for a car phone mount.
Ordered another one for the Mrs!
