MP3 Player for The Kids

Have gone down the rabbit hole researching mp3 players, started with benjie, watched a review, thought they looked like pooh. Was about to get 2 ruizu x06's but read a review saying that you had to scroll through all your songs to make a playlist. My kids are pretty tech savvy, I dont want to buy junk thats a nightmare to use. ON the other hand dont really want to buy a phone for them just yet - even a dumbphone (I like the idea of them having a device they literally can only do one thing with, so we dont have to monitor their use of it).

Would be good if it
had bluetooth
was a bit dropable
had a user interface that wasn't terrible

I would get a used Nokia Lumia 520, should be cheaper and better performance.

I can see OP's reasoning behind no devices… even without a sim, you've got wifi, and that gives you social media, and p*rn if they're savvy enough

        Airplane mode.

True that kids are tech savvy, but give them their own device and explain that it is only to be used as a music player. And there will be consequences if they break that rule. And explain the consequences. And if they break that rule enforce the consequences. Kids learn that there are rules and consequences when given benefits.

        • So a tech savvy kid won't discover how to turn wifi back on? Chrome & incognito mode?

@Spackbace: of course they can do that.

But give them boundaries, responsibility, trust and acknowledgement of those things and treat them as young people. Etc et

That's just my opinion as a parent of 3 primary school aged kids and as a psychologist

          @altomic:

          primary school aged

That's probably the main thing (and probably the age of OP's kids too).

If they were 12yrs+, all the lessons taught don't mean much - kids rebel, they also get curious.

Primary School aged, they probably would think they were rebelling by playing a game :)

Block MAC address on WiFi AP/Router. Then no wifi at home at least.

Alternative a MDM solution to disable WiFi may be an option.

I am sure that android has this feature, but you can setup apps corner so they only have access to certain apps. I tested on my Nokia Lumia 625 (they discontinued it in Windows 10) and I'm not sure how to get out of the music app.

iPod touch? You can enable things as they get older but the parental controls are pretty good.

speaking as a phone addict, I want to preserve my kids from that kind pull - I can see it starting already, I've actually got a lumia 520 and an old android phone knocking round, but I swear they would stare at the screen even if they couldn't do much else with them! And as all kids would they would push the boundaries to get to do more with those devices that they know could do more. I know its kinda mad, I'm thinking of ditching my smartphone too for similar reasons!
