Recommendations for Wired Over-Ear Headphone with Mic for Android Phone

I bought my son the Xiaomi Mi headphones with mic from overseas about 12 to 18 months ago (I think about $140-$160) and while the sound is fine the ear pieces (they supply 2 sets, an over-ear PU set and a foam on-ear set) keep falling off and the head band and over-ear pieces began perishing after 6 months. I'm looking for a similar audio quality headphone to buy him for xmas. He mostly listens to audiobooks both graphic and narrated and music on YouTube and mp3 through his Samsung S7 Edge so they don't need to be audiophile quality.

Budget Headphones would be fine if they are good enough but I can't justify spending much more than $150-$200.

Does anyone have suggestions on something similar? He had Marley head phones before that and the wires broke. We seem to be very hard on headphones. I don't want to invest in Bluetooth headphones because he sometimes listens to audiobooks for many hours and we already have enough things to recharge.

Regards

EDIT: Just to clarify he needs:
Circumaural/over-ear type headset with inline mic and volume control/answer button that works with Android

  • I’m in quite the similar situation where im looking for comfortable over ear headphones for my lil bro, I had my eye on Bose Soundtrue AE but they’ve recently discontinued the product. I’ve had a look over the AudioTechnica M series like 20x, 30x, 40x they seem very promising for the price

    • Yeah I don't think they have a mic and in-line volume control though which is necessary for smartphone use.

I was looking at M40x/M50x not long ago. I think for memory there are 3rd party mic cables on Ebay?

        • Thanks. That might be worth a look.

Thanks again. An ebay search gives me some options.

    Get an iPhone.

That sounds sarcastic, but I found >95% of headphones are built to the iPod Standard.
Meaning the Volume Up/Down, Pause/Play, Answer/Reject, Skip Track/Restart, Siri functions will work from almost all headsets with the small control buttons.
But they either won't work fully on Android, will work weird/backwards, or simply won't work at all.
    Good luck.

It isn't a sensible option I'm afraid. Aside from price, the closed supply system that Apple use which I object to, and iTunes, my son uses his Samsung gear VR set with his phone.

      • I agree, and in the same boat where I'm not going iOS ecosystem, at least not yet.
However, what I said is true…. until maybe manufacturer's wake up and start making headphones for the Android ecosystem instead, since Apple's ecosystem is now closed for the Lightning port connection.

        • I acknowledge your point about the overwhelming availability of iPhone accessories which is a factor only because Android manufacturers don't have uniform positioning of their ports or uniform implementation of Android as an OS while Apple does. I used an iPod for years but got totally sick of iTunes as a piece of software and the way Apple don't even use ID3 tags properly (I obsessively re-tag all my music and audiobooks). The technology was high quality but in the end for our usage (we both listen to a lot of audiobooks) it just made sense to use our Samsung phones with Smart Audiobook Player. I like being able to replace my own batteries, install extra memory in the form of micro SD cards, have uniform power and headphone attachments etc. I recommend iPhone to people who are happy to connect to a single portal for all their entertainment needs usually because they are somewhat inept technically and one connection and account is an advantage. It doesn't suit me or my son I'm afraid. I like to shop around and I'll admit game the system from time-to-time. We buy Samsung phones because they have all those features I mentioned and our telco (Optus) often has decent deals when we want to upgrade which in a way has made us fanboys of a sort. Your mileage may differ.

    • They look like a great headphone with true circumaural ear pieces but they don't have the in-line mic and volume control necessary to use with smart phones.

    • I didn't realise you could get the cables with in-line mic etc. from 3rd party. Thanks again.
