HDMI to (Apple) Mini Display Port Adapter under $30 exist?

Hoping some of the Apple experts could help me find an adaptor that can convert HDMI to a Mini Display Port on an iMac and that actually works? I've ordered a few cheap cables which claimed to but they simply haven't. The only device I seem to have been able to find is the "Kanex XD" which sells between $100-$150AU. Surely this cannot be the only device capable of achieving this?

Any help is appreciated.

  • Kmart has them, can't attest to the quality though.

    • Thanks but I should clarify, I need a HDMI signal to output/display on a iMac that only has a Mini Display Port. For example: To play Xbox/Playstation on an iMac screen.

Most of these cables only seems to do the opposite - where it allows me to display the iMac screen to an external source.

You can’t do what you want to do with a iMac

      • Not sure that's even possible, apple won't even allow my 2013 MacBook air to use a later 2015 iMac as an external screen.

"A HDMI port, no matter what kind of HDMI, cannot output a DisplayPort signal to display content on a DP monitor. They simply can't. The reason why the passive adapters work for the DP++ -> HDMI conversion is because DP++ ports can actually output a HDMI signal. Passive adapters do not work because HDMI -> DP is not compatible."

Here's one local & cheaper than what you've found:

    Good luck!

    • looks to be a normal display port, not mini display port

  • Ta, tho compatibility rules still apply. That site seems to have decent pricing, too.
