  • There was another discussion which mentioned this and many other options here - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/270555

I myself received $1200 back from AHM for laser eye surgery, let me know if you have any questions after reading that other thread.

    • I am with AHM and wanted to get the laser eye surgery done as well, Have been planning on it for a couple of years but never got around to it. Where is a good place to go?

  • I got mine done at Meadownick Laser Clinic in Richmond (Melbourne)

  • I looked into it, but realised that I'd have to wait 12 months for the waiting period to kick in, and spend around $5000 in premiums. Or I could spend that anyway, and have the surgery quickly. I chose to just do it. The only coverage that would cover it was the very top coverage and I just can't justify the expensive premiums every fortnight.

  • Very important change (IMO) to the Bupa Ultimate Cover this year - see the email from Bupa:

Maintaining the affordability of your cover:

From 1 July 2018, we're introducing a 3-year restricted cover period for laser eye correction surgery for a pre-existing condition. The restricted cover period is a period of time during which we will pay benefits based on an amount set by the Government (known as minimum benefits).

There's no change to your cover, however, any new member who joins your policy after 1 July 2018, will have:

    • a 3-year restricted cover period for laser eye correction surgery, including the normal waiting period;
    • since the restricted cover period starts at the same time as the waiting period, they'll serve their 12-month waiting period and then we'll pay minimum benefits for the next 2 years.

TL;DR: the waiting period to have 100% laser eye surgery coverage is changing to 3 years, instead of 1 year.
aka spending ~$4000 (for single, 1 year) -> ~$12,000 (3 years) to get full coverage to a lasik surgery (~$5000/2 eyes)

  • My 12 month waiting period on Bupa's Ultimate plan ends tomorrow. Eye surgery is booked for Monday. They are a registered provider and bill Bupa directly for 100%.

Some Ozbargainers may say that the ultimate cover is too expensive, not a great deal. I disagree.

The surgeon at the clinic is a pioneer in this field and is highly regarded in the medical community. I am happy to pay more for the best (or, one of the best).

Surgery cost is $5.8k for both eyes.

I pay $360 a month for Ultimate. They gave me first month free and waived standard extra's 2 month waiting period.

In the past 12 months, I have utilised the cover well. Physio (includes weekly clinical pilates), chiro, massage, dental, podiatry and orthotics, psychology. Things I previously put off, but now doing to improve my body and life.

Cover will be cancelled 2 weeks after surgery. For a total cost of $4.1k (12 and a half months of Ultimate), I will have enjoyed about $10k of benefits.

Better get on it before 1 July.

    • Hey there - i have done this to get eye surgery as well. What surgeon/clinic did you go with?

      • Newvision Clinic in Melb. Dr Noel Alpins was fantastic.

I've since cancelled my cover. Boy do I miss it!
