Any Sales on Commuter or Lifestyle Bikes?

I'm looking at buying a commuter bike for myself as well as possibly an entry level ladies one for my other half. Besides Anaconda and Rebel, do any retailers offer sales or discounts on bikes (excluding Kmart, etc.) at this time of the year?
I've obviously missed out on many sales on 2017 models earlier this year and wouldn't mind some older models. Personally I'm leaning towards a Giant Cross City 1 2018 for myself, but for my other half I was looking at the Liv Alight 2 and other ladies ranges. i haven't seen many Liv Alights on Gumtree or Facebook Marketplace (specifically XS ones).

You can try your luck for old stock, but as we are coming into summer and riding season there is unlikely to be any real bike shop sales. You might get a discount in the lead up to Christmas if you are lucky, or if you are lucky enough to snag some older stock they are trying to get rid of. XS frame size is probably going to be a special order, it would be unusual for a shop to order in an XS for a floor model.

Reid cycles do have fairly regular sales, but you'll be getting a Reid bike, not any other brand - not that there is anything really wrong with Reid bikes, they are decent budget bikes.

Look for a 2017 model bike (or even 2016 if you can find one).
    They are discounted.
Have a search on bikeexchange to see what is available

    • Thanks Zippy7, any tips on using bikeexchange? I find their filters to be quite difficult to use - I tend to only get a handful of private listers and bikes on special, and the great majority are full priced bikes. Perhaps my price range is quite limited? -_-

Do a keyword search for "2017", "2016", and even "2015". (No need to " the actual search).
You can also add "disc", or any other keywords you want.

Go and visit your local bike store. At this time of the year, some stores will have discounts on older floor stock that might not be advertised online or on BikeExchange.

  • Not sure where you are you but i was offered the bike your after for $550

    • I'm in Melbourne. I would jump at that price, but immediately think the bike was stolen, LOL! That price is more likely for the Giant Cross City 2 2018 as the RRP for it is $599 (it's the entry level model with 21 gears, aluminium forks, and V-brakes). I was quite keen on the Giant Cross City 1 2017, which I've been offered for $599 (RRP$799), but I have been convinced to go for hydraulic disc brakes, hence why I'm leaning very far towards the 2018 model.

      • Oh yep. It must have been the cross city 2. You might have to pay close to RRP seeing as it just came out but when theres ozbargain theres a way lol

FYI, it just so happened that after I posted this thread that a Liv Alight 2 2015 got listed on Facebook Marketplace. After a lengthy back and forth I helped work out that the bike was a size XS! I almost missed the opportunity as someone inspected the bike, but they made a low offer. I visited the seller and while I couldn’t haggle the price they threw in a $40 Giant combination lock. Price was $250, and the bike was in very decent condition, so overall I was happy!

Now I need to buy my own bike. As I’ll be commuting 9.5km each way to the city I’m buying a new one. No sales so far, sadly.

Might be tough on a new model bike but try haggling. If you are after a giant there are literally loads them around, Giant is the most common bike shop brand and there are loads of Local Bike Shops selling them. Try haggling with a couple, tell them you are ready to buy, already picked out the bike just looking for the best deal, one of them will either blink with a discount or offer you something else to sweeten the deal (helmet, pedals, pump, saddle bag etc)

      • Thanks heaps 2ndeffort. I’ll second take those haggling tips on board - haggling is something I’m not terribly good at.

Any thoughts on buying from a shop that offers free service for a certain period? Most I’ve visited were a little hesitant to say they offer about 2 basic services for the first year. One about 2-3 km from me offers free service for the first 2 years. In comparison Cycles Galleria offers lifetime free basic service, but their Trek bikes cost more than equivalent Giants.
