New Sony Receiver from Amazon US Sales STRDH770. What Are The Issues

Hi, my 7yo marantz receiver is not recognising hdmi inputs.

So planning to buy a new receiver, came across a good deal in Amazon US for the Sony STRDH770. Can people tell me what are the common pitfalls in buying a receiver from US?

Some friends have been caught out with the Voltage and no way to easily rectify. i.e. no voltage selection switch on the back of the unit. so they have had to buy a transformer which defeated the cheaper price.

Pull up the Sony US specs and look at the unit.

Yep, the back of the unit listed on Amazon US shows only 120V support here.

      • That's the one mate. Looks like I'll have to pick one from eBay sales.

You need a step down transformer that converts the mains AU240V to US120V to use.
if the receiver is anchored power plug, you have to also factor US plug.

Furthermore, you have to make sure the wattage of the transformer is adequate. Eg. if the Receiver uses 400W then you should use a transformer that supports larger Wattage.

I wouldn't waste my money on US receivers just to save a dollar.
Usually, the less voltage units output less power than the AU equivalent counterparts.

You can also look @ Germany, UK and other countries on eBay that support 240V 50Hz.

The only advantage is the cost on the higher-end receivers that you get thrashed here for top dollar however cheaper OS.
You have to also factor the Import Duties that are over $1K.

    Cheers

I work for the Victorian authorised repairer for Sony (only one) and the other thing to factor in is warranty. If you import this from overseas you will not have warranty coverage in Australia.

  • Bloody heavy too so shipping costs if you had to return it for warranty would be a major pain.
