Travel to LA and New York from Melbourne

Hi there,

I'm a fairly new traveller (I've been to Japan), was wondering if any seasoned travellers had some pro tips when it comes to airline tickets or travel recommendations for the round trip I'm planning next year.

We're 3 adults planning on travelling to LA and NY next July 2018.

My question is for those who have done this round trip, what combination of flights did you find to be cheapest?

We plan on staying for 2.5 to 3 weeks with approx half the time at each city.

I'm thinking Melb to LA to NY then back to Melb? Some have told me they've done Melb to LA to NY then back to LA then home.

Does anyone have any recommendations?

Much appreciated

We had a travel agent pull together our itinerary a few years ago.
Qantas Melb - LA, with just a change of terminal for a connecting Qantas flight through to NY. That same airline connection helped as we were delayed and the second leg was held for us.

A few weeks later we had a flight from NY to SanFran (Virgin America - it was very good), and then drove down to LA.
A few nights in LA, stayed at Manhattan Beach with the car to get us about.
Then Qantas for the LA - Melb return flight.

Qantas was ok, nothing fantastic, but was probably the shortest flight times (at that time) and that appealed.

Have been Mel - LA with Air NZ ages ago, with a stopover in Auckland. I prefer Air NZ over Qantas.

    Try Skyscanner.

July will be more expensive compared to other times. Much cheaper if you can go in early June or late August. Or even cheaper still in February to May.

Also, if looking on websites input your journey as a multi-city booking. It will likely be a few $100 cheaper than making separate bookings.

Another thing to keep in mind is that New York has multiple airports, so it can be cheaper if you're flexible about which airport/s you use.

Here's some Skyscanner searches for example:

$2050 in July via China: https://www.skyscanner.com.au/transport/d/mela/2018-07-03/la…

$1150 in May direct to LAX on Qantas: https://www.skyscanner.com.au/transport/d/mela/2018-05-01/la…

Sim card wise just remember the set up is a bit different over there, you will need to buy and activate a sim card at one of the stores unless you purchase before you go. T-Mobile cost me about $40 for a sim with 1 gig.
