How to Know if a Non Free Motorway Is Free to Use [NSW]

Hi I can't seem to find direct answer in Google on this.

Last week, at least according to my toll statement, M5 from A3 to International Airport is free to use.

Yesterday, not sure why my toll tag did not beep entering from Old Windsor Road but it did beep on the way out in Macquarie Park. Can't see yet in the statement till tomorrow.

It would be nice to know if we can know at any given moment a non free motorway is free to use, thus help on the route planning.

Help guys?

Thanks.

    The truth is out there.

  • All motorways in Sydney have a cost. The M5 is not free, it costs GST, but you can get the toll amount back in a cash back.

    • Hi yes, I know about the M5 cashback. Thank God for M5 cashbacks.

  • How old is the etag? maybe the battery is on it's way out. Recently replaced my 7 year old tag because the battery was dying.

My etag did not beep on the M5 east bound on ramps but worked fine on the M5 west bound off ramps.

It's not free. For some reason your eTag has failed to trigger the sensor and therefore it's not on your statement. Expect a payment required notice in the next few days.

    • I used M5 back and forth around 4 times last week (between A3 and INternational Airport), but none appear in the statement.

I notice though they have road work probably that's the case?

M4 usages appear in my statement.

    • Turn out that M5 east is free.

      • Well good luck to you if that's the case! Every motorway I've ever been on keeps the charges up despite roadworks making it a 40kmh zone.

        • No, seriously, A3 to International Airport in M5 is indeed free. West of this M5 is not free.

In case you don't know, M4, west of Parramatta, pretty much 80% of M4 is also still free.

And yes those other non-free motorway still charges even they do roadwork on it.

        • @foxmulder: Well, there you go! I'm just so used to paying a toll whenever I even get near a motorway. Obviously I'm not going to and from the parts that are free.

  • M5 from A3 to International Airport is free to use

M5 East has never had a toll.

    • I see now. Checking in the Toll calculator that it's indeed free.

      • Only M5 between A3 (King Georges Road) and Heathcote has the toll.

    • That's why it's all smooth sailing on the M5 until King Georges Rd …

Going from 3 to 2 lanes probably has a bit to do with that too.

  • Turn out that toll rides on Wed 22 Nov weren't free after all. Already giving me false hope on Friday, the charges today appear in my statement, after 4 days.
