Which Laptop? (Budget $1k)

Hi Ozbargainers,

Looking at getting a decent laptop and have narrowed it down to several models as found by other ozbargainers. They look comparable to a layman like me, if possible, can you please assist me by comparing / contrasting or suggesting where you would be spending your money if you were me?

I will be mainly using the computers for having about 30x chrome tabs open, running basic software and movies but want this laptop to be as future proof as possible and quick right now.

Laptops:

1. Acer Swift 3, 8th Gen Intel Core i5-8250U, NVIDIA GeForce MX150, 14" Full HD, 8GB LPDDR3, 256GB SSD, SF314-52G-55WQ

2. Lenovo 14" Flex 5 2-in-1 Laptop - i5-8250u, 8GB RAM, 256GB PCIe SSD, FHD Touch, 1.7kg

Cheers for your help with this!

Heathy

  • what is your budget?

Hi alreadytaken - looking to spend anywhere up to $1,000

  • Does this possibly beat my two above options? https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/344846

    • That's an entry-level gaming laptop with a decent discrete GPU. Your original two options have multi-threaded processors, so the better laptop would for you would depend on whether your "basic software" would benefit more from improved multi-threaded workloads or improved graphics processing. All three would be somewhat overkill for browsing and netflix.

  • Hi

I bought Acer Spin 5 13.3" at the beginning of the year for university from JB HI FI for around $900, Currently good guys have them for $998. but you maybe able to get it cheaper sometime soon. you can also get the same one with bigger SSD storage from Harvey norman for $1198.

As for the laptop performances, with 8GB of RAM it has no problem running multiple tabs and windows, But I do not recommend it for Gaming as you can hear the CPU fan working hard.

With any laptops you buy, its a good idea to fresh install windows, so you can delete all the unwanted trash files thats already installed on them.

    Acer Spin5 128 GB

    Acer Spin5 256 GB

  • same boat here.. just spent 2 hrs researching, came back to the flex.. possibly a dell, but battery not as good and +350 while on sale for 13in model, i like dell but all my old ones run hot af… warranty concerns me on the flex though

    • Yeah warranty only issue with the Flex. Could send back to a USA friend though. So you think Flex is the best bet?

  • yeh if you can afford the 'risk'factor… or a xiaomi mi air.. id get one straight away if it was under 1k and a gen8cpu..

  • been researching the spin 5, looks like a decent machine at about 1300 at the moment from HN it comes with a mixed reality unit they say is worth, and are selling for $799… might end up with this one just for local warranty factor, usb c does video and charging too…
