Christmas Gift Suggestions - from Teacher to Grade 2 Students

Hi all,

just wondering if anyone has some good suggestions for Christmas presents for my wife to give to her Grade 2 Students? Looking to spend $1 or $2 each, she has about 26 presents to buy. Have previously given books and personalised pencils/pens, but struggling to find something now.

Still wondering where this silly tradition has come from and when it'll die out.

PS: If you are a parent with kids, DO NOT give the teacher chocolate or sweets!

      • Agreed. It also puts the teacher in a difficult place accepting a gift over a certain monetary value ($50 in Qld) due to code of conduct rules.

        • Yep. Think it's $40 here in NSW.

    "Here's your Eneloop, and here's your Eneloop….."

  • Rolex for each kid

    • But from Thailand - where they send you the warranty cards later. ;)

  • A card, or maybe plus a photo with them?

  • PS: If you are a parent with kids, DO NOT give the teacher chocolate or sweets!

You are half right. I prefer when they give alcohol.

  • Assuming there have been photos over the year, a personalised bookmark (coloured paper, maybe a few stamps or a sticker and then laminated) with a picture of the child and a small message, something generic encouraging reading :P or else something specific to the child. If the school can print photos and has a laminator, you're all set :) .

  • I would suggest you go to the "party" section (not the toy section) of your local supermarket or $2 store.
You should be able to find a range of small toys (packaged in multiples eg 8 packs) designed to give away at parties, eg: bouncy balls, bubble wands, glow sticks, slinky, etc.

  • My Year 2 kids get a notebook, pen and pencil. I buy multipacks from KMart and then just wrap them up. This year it cost me under $50 for a class of 24.

Christmas baubles and writing their names in glitter?

I loved that as a gift from my teacher.

  • pencils and crayons

  • Holiday homeworks due after the holidays but all finished.(it was in China but those things still haunts me every now and then 15 years later.)

  • Yet another thing!? This is just getting stupid. She should use her school budget if she still has access to it ;)

Make a batch of slime, portion it out to 26 small containers. Seems to be the latest craze at my kids school at the moment. My wife is also a teacher and the copious boxes of chocolates she receives have been a lifesaver on many occasions when we forget to buy gifts.

    • Yep… slime or those gooey sticky animals (basically slime in the shape of an animal) seems to be big at the moment for my Yr1 and Yr2's.

And I also agree with the "buy in bulk and split it up" thing.
Whether that's slime, lollies, stickers etc.

Or a lucky dip thing, with individual toys from a $2 shop (again, but the bigger sets and split it into smaller presents), and wrapping the toys in newspaper or something. It's the excitement of the "lucky dip" and people can trade toys with one another afterwards if they like.

    • Slime is super popular right now…these glow in the dark ones are $2 at Kmart …

Yep and those squishy sticky animals are $2 at Kmart as well!

  • There's 20 packs of xmas theme pencils with novelty rubbers in the Reject Shop that my kids' teachers often pick up and hand out at the end of year, they went down really well with my Kindy and Year 2 last year.

As far as gifts for teachers go, I'll put a $20 Dan Murphy's voucher in their Christmas card and write something nice. I make sure not to put their name on the DM card, just the amount, that way if they're not a drinker I figure they can always regift it.

As a teacher, chocolate is fine! (Honestly, when I get something from a student I don't care what I get - the fact they thought that much of me matters more).
What I've done in the past is buya Lego Advent calendar then each cold gets a box. Random fun, no-one excluded. They've all loved it! Might be able to get it as a deal too (if you're lucky)

  • I just finished my six week internship with a kindergarten class and I got them each this bag. It may be over the budget and requires a little DIY skills but some extra ideas never hurt! You can put in anything you like, chocolate, lollies, toys, stationery, etc. Let me link you!

I hope my suggestions help your wife during this busy time in the school term! :)

  • why not buy baubles (15 pack $2.40 at bigW), write 3M 2017 (or whatever your class is called) on them written in glue, dip it in glitter and give it to the kids to decorate their own?

  • cygnet fingers

  • I was just in Kmart today buying stuff to put in the kiddy treat bags for my son's 5th bday. They have Soo many cool stuff for $1-3. There's these super cute erasers shaped like lipsticks ($2 for a 3 pack), sundaes ($2 for 5 pack), macarons, travel connect4 or guess who game ($2), lollipop erasers ($1 for 8), stamp sets ($2), glow in the dark slime ($2), reindeer or gingerbread plush toy ($3). There's even like wooden puzzles (ABC, farm animals, numbers) for $2! Heaps of wooden toys under $5 in the toys section. Maybe she'll find stuff there?

Isit rude to just give a gift card to the teacher? Really not sure abt all this school etiquette but rather give something she'd use rather than chocs :/

    • She'd? What about he'd?
Gift cards are welcome (although that does come close to cash and while I'd LOVE more cash there are laws about it…)

      • Oh I was referencing my son's teacher ;)

I tried googling these rules abt what teachers can accept for WA but couldn't find anything..

Fidget Spinner? You can probably pick them up for $1 now.

Also I agree with not giving teachers chocolates. I am an Early Childhood Educator and every year I always get boxes and boxes of chocolate. It's so annoying. I can't eat it all (nor do I want to), so I re-gift them. I would love Movie Vouchers/Gift Cards or Spa/Massage Vouchers instead. NO MORE CHOCOLATE/FOOD, please!!!!

Load the kids up on sugar and than send them back to their parents.

  • One of my teachers gave us whoopee cushions! That was really fun.

  • Another suggestion: You can get small packs of play dough (like what you'd get for party bags) for around $2 each. Fun and 'educational' (or arty or whatever other excuse you want to give it 'cause who doesn't like play dough? Even the director for Guardians of the Galaxy gives it out as rewards to his staff!)

    • probably just make it in the classroom and trick the kids into science
